I have a friend who has a laptop and when she tries to burn a cd halfway through the burn the computer shuts down it's an HP about a year old. Any ideas?

hmm possible firmware update...else if shes running XP, theres an update also available for some cd-r...

maybe she has too many running programs?

I had that problem when I first put a cd burner in my computer and had too many running programs.

Tell her to shut down any programs that arent needed for the burning.

Sounds like processor overheat to me. Check and make sure the cooling fan is running and the heatsink is clean.

that's what I thought... but I've never taken apart a laptop before... should I be scared of it?

No! They can smell fear. If you're afraid, that thing will eat you alive.
