Members: We (father & son) are the new owners of an 88 non-turbo RX-7 130K). It sat for many months and we are in the process of seeing what we have on our hands. It will run reasonably well, but not sure if it will idle properly as were were faced with coolant leaks (waterpump replaced). I would like to take a compression test; however, I understand it takes a special gauge. Is one out there for purchase at what cost, or is it a Checker Item? I see comments on Apex seals and other components. How will we know if the engine is too far gone or just full of carbon from sitting. Will TLC bring it back? I see the use of ATF to help with the carbon problem. Will the compression test tell all? Any help/information is welcome. Don

Takes a special gauge?? Hmm i just hooked up a regular one, but i already knew my '87 na's compression was ****. My motor ran strong till 167k then died, now i am going to get a new one.

You can use a regular gauge. Just take out the valve that holds the pressure. The needle will bounce with each compression cycle as you crank the engine. Each bounce should be about 100psi, some report up to 130psi but that is exceptional.
