Worker dies, another hurt in Post cereal blast
Explosion rockets debris through cinder-block wall Thursday, August 24, 2006; Posted: 11:59 a.m. EDT (15:59 GMT) BATTLE CREEK, Michigan (AP) -- An explosion rocked a Post cereal plant early Thursday, killing one worker and injuring another, authorities said. The cause of the early morning blast was under investigation. The explosion occurred in a steam tank and sent debris through a cinder block wall, severing the leg of a man in his early 30s, said Battle Creek Police Chief David Headings. He died at the scene. An woman hit by the debris was taken to a hospital and was expected to fully recover, Headings said. Cereal processing equipment was being restarted after a power failure, said Cathy Pernu, a spokeswoman for plant owner Kraft Foods. The killed worker had been with the company for 11 years, Pernu said. "Our hearts go out to his family," Pernu said. "This is a terrible tragedy for our plant." |
