A turbo version Mini, so you can get some more bang for your buck, at the cost of a huge hump in the hood.

The two turbo units mark a major change for the two best-loved Mini models, the Cooper and Cooper S. The Cooper will get a major power hike to 143 hp from today’s 115-hp engine. While the power output of the S stays at 170 hp, the turbo*charged engine promises a big improvement in driveability and power delivery over the current supercharged setup.

I have the article in Autoweek. The hump on the hood is only on the test mules and will not likely be there for production.



I personally think the S/C is great no lag whatsoever but if they feel a turbo unit will be better go for it. It will possibly make my S/C model worth more in the long run.



But....



I also read the engine for the turbo model is a better sorted lighter engine, they call the engine in my car "thrown together" so the turbo model just might be a better model.

our mini sales manager is an idiot. she sold a john works cooper for the same price as a normal because she didnt know it was a john works model. (she was also the salesmen for it)

With any luck, yes, the hump won't make it into production. I can see some turbo upgrades coming in short order as well, the tuners can have a field day with the new powerplant configuration.

FWD aint my thing.....I could never dig the Mini. Turbo, supercharged, or whatever....

I said the same thing..... until I drove one.



No offence but, My John Cooper Works has beaten 3 different RX-8's in races on 3 different occasions from a standing start and from 30-120MPH..... and dont go into the handling thing because the Mini DOES drive like a go kart.

As far as tuning a Turbo I am anxious to see what they come up with. I will not be suprised to see them hit close to 300 HP with them. They are close to 275 w/ the S/C ones now. Remember too all the S models come with LSD's now.

Admittedly, I am not a fan of FWD either, but I had the chance to drive an S model and was impressed, with another 100+ HP I think I will be more along the lines of enthralled.

Short version; the bonnet will be higher due to pedestrian safety, no double headlights, new grille closer to original's design (pics inside).



In the Autocar mag itself there's an extra bit about the engine - it basically says the engine was designed by BMW and will be using BMW ancillaries from the six cylinder engines. Basically it's a huge improvement over the crude single-cam Brazillian built Chrysler engine, they say the oil pump alone gives 1% rise in fuel economy. The engine will make it's way into 20 different Mini/Peugeot/Citroen cars (no Bimmers though)

I had no idea. That's excellent news. It definitely needed one.
