What is the best one for downloading movies and music for free, without having to worry about getting raped by viruses?

kazaa was good, but it killed my computer withthe viruses, and i don't want that to happen again.

what about bearshare (sp?)?

ambassador_josh 07-06-2005 10:35 PM

mIRC

There's a learning curve, and a wait, and usually slower downloads, BUT

1. IRC filesharing has been out longer than even the original napster and it still hasnt gone away

2. ITS AMAZING how much is out there

3. Most of it (i've never had any crap files) is very well organized

I'll send ya a file list of one of the users I dl from...you'll be amazed

ambassador_josh 07-06-2005 10:38 PM

This guy is on Undernet, in the #mp3_collective room

nismo convert 07-06-2005 10:43 PM

venomrx7 07-06-2005 10:43 PM

Nothing beats BitTorrent. Even mIRC.

Here is a very SIMPLISTIC explanation...just so you BitTorrent geeks don't jump on me.

First, you need to get a torrent file. The torrent file knows how many files to download if it's an archive (.zip) or a directory, etc. It also has the address for the tracker. The tracker knows how many people have the torrent open, and then knows how many people your BitTorrent client can contact to get the files from.

There are two types of clients in the BT world: seeds and peers. Peers do not have all of the file, but are sharing what they have. Seeds have the entire file. The more seeds a file has, the faster you are going to get it.

Hopefully that helps out a bit.

Get a client first, and then head to these sites to search for files. By "opening" the files (you don't need to save them) your client should ask you where you want to save the files and then it will do its thing.

My fav. client right now is BitComet

Go to these sites to get torrents:

Isohunt

The Pirate Bay

One thing is for sure: bittorent is watched close. Dont think its untraceable...a list of the torrent details will show the IP of everyone in the hash who's sharing...In fact, its actually easier for people to get caught; This way, they can look at users on a torrent rather than files on a user

BEST WAY to share files? FTP. That way you and your friends can do their individual pillaging, then upload it to an FTP server and share the fruits of each other's labor

Soulseek is GREAT for music, but sucks for movies, software, files, etc.

venomrx7 07-07-2005 01:16 AM

Thanks for all the help guys. I'm gonna look into everything. After getting fucked last time, i'm kinda paranoid about viruses.

I think I'm gonna try to figure the torrents out.

ambassador_josh 07-07-2005 02:32 AM

So long as you have autoscripts OFF you wont get viruses off servers on IRC...these are files that reside on another's computer, and they're very proud of their collections...That guy who's file list I posted has almost 41000(!) files, and you can bet your sweet ass he does quality control on his own stuff. These are people who really care about the stuff they offer, almost like a pride or ego thing. IRC is the place where everything pops up first, and if you're "in" with these people and gain their trust, you can get distro access... THATS where the real score is...Distro access on one of the servers would give you access to just about every movie, song, application, game, and TV show you ever wanted, at OC3 speeds. These people often work for big companies who actually have OC3's and work the system so they can use their job's bandwidth to host. If you hear about a big pirating ring going down, its gonna be somethign like this, where the authorities brag that they confiscated millions of dollars worth of stuff...its HUGE whats out there.

On the other hand, most P2p stuff on the gnutella network is put out by people who really dont care (or so i've seen) so you'll find 500,000 copies of the same file, all with different file names and sizes. Its also where the viruses hang out. Bittorrent is better than gnutella because files are weeded out if they're crap, but everything, even IRC, has its flaws.

The torrent file itself doesn't have IPs...the tracker knows about all IPs that have the torrent open though.

In terms of safety, DC++ and mIRC are probably the best way to evade the law and pirate as much as possible.

If I could put up an FTP of my stuff, I would, but my university limits upload. Haha.

Before the MPAA and RIAA broke the law and started using Internet2, there was a HUGE DC++ hub called i2hub for I2 connected universities...talk about good times.
