Oops.

First off, this is old by internet terms; it's already been posted on every damn video site, and on every car forum.

Secondly, he was an avid autocrosser, pretty decent too, a personal friend of mine. He takes meticulous care of his car. He had recently purchased those wheels (not sure the type, I just know they're very light, and expensive), along with the new spline lug nuts. The luge nuts threaded on. The car passed safety tech.

It turns out that when he asked the auto parts store for a certain thread size, they gave him the wrong ones. The peaks of the lug threads (if that makes sense) were all that were holding on, so as soon as lateral g's were applied, all the wheels popped off.

The wheels studs looked like someone just filed a bit off, the factory lug nuts threaded right back on.

Damage was the front fenders, rear unibody, a sway bar end link, the rotors, the brand new wheels, and the wheels lugs. Somehow the full re-a exhaust was not touched.

He spent a lot of money bringing the car back to its pristine shape, had all the body work done and the car painted (along with a 99-spec front bumper). Had all the parts repaired, and hopefully soon I'll be helping him install a bunch of go-fast goodies.

He wrote the main office of the auto parts store, showed them the video, and had the testimony of the folks at the autocross event backing him up. The company didn't pay for any of the repairs, but did buy him 2 new replacement wheels.

yeah old vid.. makes me sad when i see it.. such a beautiful car.. just goes to show that it pays to be very involved in anything that gets done to your car.. check and double check and triple check to make sure things are correct and safe.

Ah so it wasn't his fault.

I'd never seen the video before, and it looked to me like what had happened was that he swapped to his "race wheels" and forgot to torque them down properly. Which, in essence is what happened, but not really, if that makes sense.

Mr Peepers, my ex pro7 car passed tech too.

upon inspection, one brake pad was installed backwards (cheap hawk blues!), the tie rods were finger tight (and loosening!), the master shutoff switch didnt, the front shocks were not actually attached to the strut etc etc.

anyways not sure what tech actually does, but ive gone thru and checked or rebuilt everything
