i keep hearing references to it and wonder if its readable, or its like not

I admit a near absolute ignorance regarding the man and his work. Just for kicks, I read his bio on Wikipedia. He seems an interesting enough chap. The biggest deterrent to my reading his work would be the fact that it was originally written in German, and so much of the subtler meaning and nuances can be lost in translation. This fact aside, I did rather enjoy a few of the works of Herman Hesse many years back and they were written in German as well.
