Imagine a small, quiet, low maintenance, low energy compressor (compared to current industry standards). In the summer time, those peak power draws when people get home from work would go way down. Food transport and storage will become cheaper. The amount of electricity/money saved in commercial refrigeration and air conditioning would add up considerably.

Sorry for the tangent, I'm just excited about new technology. I can't wait for residential applications to be developed.

That design really only lends itself to larger machines with larger specific volumes of refrigerant. Its just a new spin on an old design. Centrif machines have been getting the punt in the last few years in favour of screw compressors.. Screws don't care about liquid flooding, however they do need a healthy supply of oil and they go a long time between overhauls and have much better capacity modulation that recip or centrif. They don't surge and try to jump off their bases like centrif machines either...

As for energy friendly small machines, we have had them for years, check out servel or dometic...

We could have much more energy friendly refrigeration right now if people would quit being so scared of ammonia.. 450 btu/lb compared to 90 but/lb of r22.
