I'm buying a house with 2.5 acres, 2 sides of the lot are already fenced, but was thinking about an invisible fence for the other 2 sides of the lot. Anyone installed this and how much did you pay for your size lot?

1988RedT2 04-12-2006 08:02 PM

Invisible fences will only keep out invisible intruders. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683785.gif

j9fd3s 04-12-2006 09:05 PM

i dunno how much it costs to install, but the collars are like $400!

Seppuku 04-12-2006 09:06 PM

would that be invisible money?

phinsup 04-12-2006 09:08 PM

how do those work, the dog wears a collar and it shocks them when they leave? Or does it just emit a sound? I know you have to train the dog so it knows to return to the yard.

My dogs would prolly just take off running if it shocked them lol

it shocks em, actually i have no idea. by the time i got there the dog's had all been trained, so they dont go near it, for all i know it throws popes at the dog

loudazzrx7 04-12-2006 09:39 PM

the collar, gets tripped. They use 14 guage wire, some use 182hd wire that puts out the signal when the dog gets to that wire--its its ass!Simple as hell to do it yourself.

Rob x-7 04-13-2006 05:55 AM

you train the dog by zapping it on purpose, you put flags along the property and the dog will fear the property line.

Larger or faster dogs will run right through it because it only zaps them for a limited range, then they are home free.

You mean "away from home free"? https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683785.gif

banzaitoyota 04-13-2006 06:57 AM

and they do NOTHING to keep strays out of your yard

Baldy 04-13-2006 07:22 AM

My grandparents had one. The dog's collar emits a beeping sound when the dog gets near the boundary. When it hits the boundary, it shocks them. If they're not trained properly, they'll just get zapped and not know why and keep running (like my grandparents' dog).

I knew my wife's dogs were experienced escape artists. When we moved to the new place, I fenced a large pen with about 600 feet of 6' chain link. Knowing they would dig out, I then ran an electric fence energizer through a single strand of wire about 9 inches above the ground. It literally took half a year before those dogs figured it out. They only got zapped a few times, but then they spent most of their days cowering in the doghouse. Now they're fine. They have a path worn around the perimeter, about 2 feet from the wire.

Training is essential, or they'll just get zapped and not understand why. And their instinct will be to run away, not turn around and stay where they're supposed to.

Lapis_Blue 04-14-2006 12:21 PM

I picked one up at petsmart for like $250 out the door and its not too bad to set up. of course, I dont have that much land around my place, so you would probly need 2 if you wanted to make a large area

Seppuku 04-14-2006 03:09 PM

how do you tell if theres a "hole" in your invisible fence, put the collar on and walk around it all?

https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/blink.png that could be a lucrative job!

rfreeman27 04-16-2006 01:31 AM

the control box on the one at my house shows when the line has been cut.

If you teach the dogs when they are young it is much easier.

I can put up white flags wherever the **** I want now and my dogs know not to cross them. I dont even have to use the collars...

What I want to know is this: If the fence you're buying is invisible, how do you know you're not getting ripped off? I mean, you could be buying an empty box, right? https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683785.gif

do you need mimes to install it?

Seppuku 04-17-2006 12:28 PM

and then what if the mimes gets trapped in a invisible box how will you let him out? The land of invisible is far uncertain indeed.

93 R1 04-17-2006 05:28 PM

buy a junk chainsaw at a pawn shop. Use it to cut into the ground a few inches. Push in the wire in the cut and cover it up. easy as that

94touring 04-17-2006 09:38 PM

People usually dig holes with chainsaws? Can I use a shovel instead? LOL Dirt here isn't exactly hard to dig.

75 Repu 04-18-2006 02:17 AM

it just seems like it would be easier with a chainsaw.. since you only need a hole wide enough for a wire..

1988RedT2 04-18-2006 06:14 AM

Think of the chainsaw as a really, really small ditch witch. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683785.gif

ok how bout a toothpick then?

banzaitoyota 04-18-2006 11:16 AM

Why ruin a chain saw when you could rent the right tool for $50?

Or just use the magic spraypaint they have on the landscaping shows

94touring 04-18-2006 09:37 PM

Magic spray paint?

Seppuku 04-18-2006 11:03 PM

is that like in looney tunes where you paint a black hole and things just fall through until you try and run in yourself?

banzaitoyota 04-19-2006 06:58 AM

The paint the landscape designer sprays on the grass to show the location of the new bed, then in the next scene: Sod is removed, topsoil added, pave wall constructed and all plants planted. You know the magic spray paint https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683664.gif

93 R1 04-19-2006 09:19 AM

junk chainsaw=mini ditch witch. Just like was said before.

Its faster and easier then digging, but whatever floats your boat.
