Looking for something for work, and also for a little bit of fun with games and interweb. How decent are they as far as reliability? I will probably go with something with a P4 processor. The things have never failed me. I actually have never had a computer fail on me, as far as parts breaking.

Just looking for recommendations. I don't want HP, had it for a while in a desktop, have E-machines, hate it. Folks have DELL, but I don't want a DELL.

Let me have it.

I've got a gateway. It works great but there customer services sucks big time. My memory card reader stopped working and it took 4 trips back to gateway before it was finally fixed. I don't think I'll ever buy another one from them now. I haven't had any issues since and it has worked great but they really pissed me off during my problem.

I almost bought a Sony Vio when I bought my gateway. I think that's what I'll buy next.

VAIO is really too much for me. It's just some silly look to the notebook. I am actually looking to spend under 1k on this, as it will just be a small database backup for work, playing games, wireless web(most come with the card already). I just get tired of having a desktop.

And Alienware's computers are actually under 1k, but only a select few, and they are pretty basic.

They helped out quite a bit when i was making my decision.

i like the vaio's.. best buy had one for 1149 after rebate that i considered.

phinsup 01-29-2006 12:20 AM

i had a sony 2 laptops ago, they may have improved, but nothing could convince me to buy another.

i think the article said he just sat it in his lap like any other labtop and ended up in the ER several hours later

phinsup 01-29-2006 12:29 AM

yea i usually burn mine trying to rub it on something hot, helps if you spit on it a little first, then if you hear that "ssssss" sound you can abort with less long term damage.

The Alienware is great, but way overpriced unless you're going to do a lot of gaming on it like I do. Steer clear if it's for work.

phinsup 01-29-2006 12:58 AM

i can't wait to get this new hp, i am really looking forward to having the shortkey number pad https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png I'm happy that it takes dual hard drives, vosko hooked me up with an hd for my old laptop so i can just take this one out, throw it in my laptop and have all my files, not sure if my memory will work or not, but it's always cheaper just to buy generic mem elsewhere, i upgraded everything else.

I wanna get some extra mem cause i have a 128 meg dedicated vid card and you can share another 128 for 256 vid.

Will be my first 64 bit proc as well

spaceman Spiff 01-29-2006 08:15 AM

if you want to do any gaming on a laptop i highly recomend you save for a bit and go with a dell xps. great system, short battery life but great system

sweet7 01-29-2006 09:45 AM

Alienware is great, but not for your price range. Plus shady FedEx employees like to ******* steal them and make you jump through a million hoops and wait another 2 wks for alienware to build you another.

******* cum dumpsters.
