Save yourself some money and get a aluminum one, they weight nothing anyway.

I agree. Chances are that any CF hood you get is going to require hood pins.

Are TII hoods aluminum? Or just convertible hoods?

I'm not sure on TII having them or not, but i know most GXL's have aluminum hoods.

GXL's have steel hoods. TII's, convertibles, and sport models had aluminum hoods.

yeah my GX has an aluminum hood....light as ****....i could play freezbee with it

Rotaryman88 04-17-2002 05:27 PM

Actually, I don't believe the AL hoods are model-specific. All T2s and convertibles have them..that is known. However, you can have an SE, GXL, GTU, GTUs, or any other rx7 w/ an AL hood...my buddy has an '86 SE w/ an AL hood..but my '88 SE came w/ a steel one...it may have been part of a different package..dunno.

It's hit or miss with some cars. It's hard to tell if a hood is the same one that came with the car unless you know the entire history of the car. In Canada TII's have steel hoods. ???

winger 04-17-2002 05:53 PM

can it be weather related?

Rob x-7 04-17-2002 07:25 PM

Chances are if a car was supposed to come with the aluminum hood, and its gone, someone replaced it and went with the more easily found, and much cheaper steel hood. Same could be said on the other end, maybe at one time a car with a steel hood needed one, and one was gotten from a junk yard and they didnt know there was even a difference and the guy who needed the hood lucked out and got a aluminum one, or the body shop raped the insurance company across the coals and made them shell out for a aluminum hood, OR CHARGED THEM FOR A ALUMINUM hood, and gave the car supposed to be having a aluminum hood a steel hood........whew that made me dizzy

My freind has an 86' GXL w/ aluminum hood, if you think about it GXL was the fancey model than, so they should have aluminum hoods.

Somebody probably switched the hoods because GXL's came with steel hoods.

Not to keep arguing, but the book written by Jack K. Yamaguchi in 86' says about the GXL and how SOME would come with 4 piston brakes or aluminum hood, and I think some other options.

Speaking of which I want that ******* book, GOD DAMN LIBRARY WON'T SELL IT!!!!! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/angry.png :madgo:

Neither my '86 GXL nor my '89 GTU have the aluminum hood. I certainly wish I did. My dad's '92 and '01 Miata have both had aluminum hoods, and they're so frikken' light.

isamu 04-18-2002 12:54 AM

I have a chance to buy an aluminum hood for $150.00. Does this sound like a decent price? I really want to buy it, but the guy says he has a steel one for 100.00 if I want that one instead.

vosko 04-18-2002 11:28 AM

alot of the automatic cars had aluminum hoods ...

Rob x-7 04-18-2002 07:54 PM

OK, I talked to a guy who knew a guy who knows a guy who was married to a cousin of a janitor at Mazda and his brother was the guy in charge of hoods, and he said that he "for shits and giggles used to drink Sapparo beer on Fridays at lunch and put the light hoods on all those cars because he had a good buzz going and didnt want to lift the heavy hoods"...and thats pretty much a quote!

UniqueTII 04-18-2002 09:53 PM

Oh goody...the hood debate. My TII has a steel hood...take that!

rotarychainsaw 04-18-2002 10:27 PM
