I have many opinions on this topic and the relevant "facts" associated with it, but the "where are they now" aspect of it is the one that stands out the most I guess. I'm not talking about sweeping generalized prophets who were high on chemicals blabbering about "visions" of the future and the crazy doomsday calendars, acts of the universe, flares, asteroids, Earth targeted by jets from a supermassive black hole and all that randomness.

Its the pyramids around the world, but more specifically the Egyptian pyramids that resonates, to me, about the ability, intelligence and will of ancient man. How do you build a pyramid, like the Great Pyramid, to that size and scale, when modern man doesn't have the ability to replicate it, even in 1/4 scale without catastropic failure in its construction? If you speculate that there was no "outside intervention" and someone, or a group of someones were intelligent enough to build it, how do you motivate the number of people and resources it would have taken to build something of that size and to what timeline? Not just the materials to build the pyramid, but the food and water to keep the people healthy for that long?

Do I think the world is going to end in 2012? Who knows. Its assumed that thousands, maybe hundreds of thousands of differnet forms of life have come and gone on this planet, and we are one of billions of potential places in the universe that can support life in many forms. If it ends tomorrow, what makes us so special? Just becasue we walk upright and use cutlery doesn't mean we cannot become extinct for any number of reasons, weather they are within our control or not.
