what type of v-6s have people put in Rx7s, my engine is on its way out and i need a cheap alternative, i wanted a v-8, put i need to spend less than a grand, and i will do the work myself, granny's shop sells kits for the chevy 4.3, but i can get a chevy 2.8 from a 3rd gen camaro....i'm ot doin this for performance, i'm doing thi because i can't afford the rotary engine to replace it

wanta be boosted 09-28-2003 04:12 PM

What year is your car?

I would suggest NOT putting an american V6 into your car, seeing as how EVERYONE will hate you, atleast get a V8. But I suppose the V6 would be lighter on teh front end.

Anyways, look into finding a VG30 (Nissan 300ZX motor). That would be better (in my eye's)

BrandonDrecksage 09-28-2003 07:45 PM

its a 91...like i said, not for perforamnce....i jsut need the car moving cause the engine is on th way out, and i can get my hands on a decent v-6 for 200, and a t-5 tranny for 300

wanta be boosted 09-28-2003 08:41 PM

For $500 you could get a good running short block off of the forums, and it would be MUCH easier, because your going to have to fab everything up, unless you use a kit from grann'y speed shop.

And then that will cost you more money.

toddp31 09-28-2003 08:56 PM

You will end up spending more $$$ if you swap something else in. You will run into ton's of small problems that you didn't think of, costing more in the long run. Just save up enough money and get it done right, with a $1000 your not give yourself much to work with.

Acctualy you won't run into mcuh of any problems putting a V6 (chevy/ford), into an RX-7, because there are no clearance issue's with a motor that small, and if you carb it, you really don't have to wire anything up other than the starter and altornator.

But I still think it would be cheaper for you to jsut put a rotary back in it. Especially if you just blew your motor, because all you have to do is buy a short block, and wala. Presto is runs again.

BrandonDrecksage 09-29-2003 06:14 PM

well, i need a car that runs, thats y i only have a 1000, can't have my car off the road for a long time, granny's kit is like 300 or 500, plus motor and trans, don't need anything else because its carb(which i hate)...how much would a short blockb be...and i assume ur talkin used, no new, and then, what happens if the persfon i buy it from screws me?....i can easily rebuild a piston engne

BrandonDrecksage 09-29-2003 06:16 PM

what type of tranny would go with the nissian motor...only problem i see with that could be the dimesions, because it has the cames in the head..nmot the block...right?....also there is no kit to install that

wanta be boosted 09-29-2003 06:28 PM

Well a short block 13B NA (used), can be bought for $500 prety easily, and if I were you I would talk to Kevin Landers at Rotary Resurection, he's a really good guy, and knows what he is doing. And he sells base beuilds for like $1000-1200.

As for the VG30, yes it does have over head cams (I think twin), but the clearance still shouldn't be an issure, and you would have to make everything your self, so that means you would have to have the tools.

But it is very well possible to install it for under $1000 if you already have the motor. I could have had my 7MGTE in my car for $1000 and that is motor, tranny, ECU, harness, ...., includes, but I had to buy a clutch which cost me $350, and I also have to buy a radiator, which will be like another $200, and and exaust system. Along with other things that will pop up here and there, but I should be able to finish it for just under $2000 (twice what I expected).

Anyways, if I were you, and all I wanted was for it to be running and driveing, and I had $1000. Like I said I would talk to Kevin Landers and see what he can do for you.

Or, if you want to try to rebuild your own engine, check out rotary aviation, they sell base rebuild kit for $600, and master rebuild kits for like $800-900.

BrandonDrecksage 09-29-2003 09:03 PM

i would have to send my engine to him though...right?...caus ei can't have my car down for that long, i could do the swap in a weekend with my father and friend(the chevy v-6)...but to send out the rotary to kevin, that is at least two weeks in shippsing, plus shipping costs, not to mention the turn around rate...if i had another car, it wouldn't be a problem, i'd do that, same thing with rebuilding my engine, i'm confident that i could do it, but i know it would take me longer than a weekend

I don't think the Nissan will clear the brake booster.

I'd rule the 2.8 out as they are heavy and don't put out much power in stock form.

How about a Supra Straight 6?? They are smooth as silk and can make huge power.

BrandonDrecksage 09-30-2003 02:04 PM

okay...once eagain...let me make this clear, i'm not looking for performance, i need my car back on the road quickly...and a supra inline 6 isn't cheap

DJ Rotor 09-30-2003 02:11 PM

You might be surprised, check out the 5M-GE from the 84-85 Supras, two valve twin cam, good engines (160hp stock) and not expensive at all.

Hope you can get it going soon, however you decide.

Have you looked at my car? Those engine's are llong, and I had to cut the fire wall.

I bought my 7MGTE for $500, and it came with everything that I needed exept for the MAF.

You could buy a 7MGE/7MGTE for the same price and have more power, not to metion they were reworked, and the 7M is all around a better engine (in my eye's), but the 2JZ is even better https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

And as for the Kevin Landers thing, he is in East TN, so if you are local then you could go there, and dro your old engine off. And I don't know how he does business, but he may just send you an engine that has already been rebuild, and you give him your old one for a core.

But I would ask him, and see what he says about it.

Just to help you out a little bit, there is a motor on that thread for sale, that was rebuilt by Kevin Landers, and has 40,000 miles on it, and a street port. And he's asking 900 for it, but he said he won't ship.

Although most of the time people will ship oncce te find out how easy it realy is to do. And it should cost like $100 or so to ship it.

BrandonDrecksage 09-30-2003 07:02 PM
