The engine not the car! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683431.gif

What would it take to slap a renesis engine in a 87 N/A RX-7

I.E. Tranny/ECU/ anything else..

also would mazda start selling the engine as soon as the RX-8 is released?

FikseRxSeven 04-01-2003 01:04 AM

custom motor mounts

serpent12 04-01-2003 05:12 AM

A lot of money

turborotor 04-01-2003 11:31 AM

Yup alot money. I'll bet around 6k to 8k for the engine, new, everything new

RXciting 04-01-2003 11:35 AM

insted of buying the whole new engine is it possible to fit the rotor housings on the 13b side and center housings?

Apex13B 04-01-2003 08:21 PM

nope...they are totally different from what i see

FikseRxSeven 04-01-2003 11:07 PM

well i know that the rotors can be swapped....... light weight rotors...... but hte housing and sides are different

RXciting 04-02-2003 10:37 AM

light weight rotors .. are they lighter then the RX-7 ones?

Turbo II 04-02-2003 02:32 PM

i know someone who is already planning on doing this and is in the process of getting a motor from japan. it seems like its gonna cost an arm and a leg. and in his case, if i were him i would just go with a larger turbo for my 3rd gen

I'm holding off on my rebuild to get more info on this. Sending your FD engine to Pineapple can cost you the same $6-$8k stated above. Although, I don't think it would be that cheap. An important factor is will the PowerFC be available so you don't have to buy the RX8 ECU.

Now the most important questions: 1. Will the overheating problems be gone it you slap a turbo on it. 2. Will the Apex seals have a longer lifespan?

If it works out well, I predict it to be as common as Acura Motors in Honda Civics! Eventually we'll see motor mount kits and all that stuff. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/boink.gif

What would Pinnapple be doing to your engine to make it cost over 6 grand. I mean damn, a rebuilt and port should run about 4.5K, I don't think they charge that much.

GoRacer 05-01-2003 12:53 AM

^ Yeah they do, so does Mazdatrix (replace instead of reuse). But you have to add shipping if you are out of state.

Has anyone got the measurements for this? If so, please post! I assume that since the 8's been out in Japan for a little while, somebody's got to have the numbers. Detailed engineering drawings would be better of course, but I'm not that much of an optimist--I'll settle for the other. But having considered the same thing, I figure we're going to want measurements of the following (at the very least):

1: Locations/distances for all mounting bracket holes, and the bolts on the engine frame holding it in place.

2: Length of the transmission and attatchment placement for that (I'd rather not carve a new hole for the shifter).

3: New length of the driveshaft, from the back of the new tranny to where it meets the old differential.

4: Clearance in the engine bay. Since the 13B-Renesis is smaller overall than the old 13B's, I doubt it will be an issue for RXciting, but for 1st Gens, I don't have a comparison of Renesis vs. 12A size. Let alone if you're thinking of adding any kind of forced induction, since that'll add more volume needed in the bay.

5: Running temperature of the Renesis. It's probably the most important thing. We can cut, order, etc. new mounting hardware. If the Renesis overheats after all that work, we're screwed. Cutting holes (or redirecting cold air) shouldn't be that big an issue, but I'd like to know about it ahead of a blown seal.

6: "Soak" weight of the Renesis. While we're considering making new hardpoints, why not slim them down to jet-fighter tolerances?

Sorry if I'm just stating the obvious. But damn, I'm gonna love this project. Even if it takes 10 years and the 4th gen 7's are out by then, it's gonna be worth it. An RX-7/8 (?) should make the ultimate rotary.

just do a 20b. whats the point of having a new renesis when you can have a 20b? i guess it would be a little cool for bragging rights but a 20b would be much more cool.

1. no, the turbos are the overheating problem.

1a. they wont fit either

2. in na form yes, turbo ?

the renisis motor is 5k for just the block (new, there arent rebuilds yet)
