I talked to a guy abour a problem with my car and he said that it may need a engine replacement. I asked if he was going rebuild the engine and he said no, that would get a reman from Mazda. Is this as good as a rebuild? It obviously wont have the Apex seals or anything like that, but other than that, will the reman be as good as a rebuild?

It will have all apex seals installed. Your comment about that confused me. It will be the closest thing thing you are going to get to new. Mazda rebuilt the engine and replaced anything that needed replacing basically.

Apex seals are what people refer to as tip seals. Every rotary has them. If not there would be no compression. Just some Apex seals are better then others. Mazda would put the original equipment seals in, another company might use a different brand that to try and get different performance from them.

Any ideas which ones Mazda uses? Are they good or average or the lowest quality ones they can get?

Hmm, ok there is something confusing this thread. When you refer to the word Apex seals are you refering to the company Apexi??? I think you might be since you are using caps for the "A" and it really should be lower case. Its the name of a part not the name of a company.



Arguably the best apex seal your going to get is the Mazda oem seal.



Just get a stock Mazda rebuild for $2200 its a complete engine.



Does that make more sence? apex seals are the name of the part kinda like rotor. There are a few aftermarket places that make apex seals but the oem seals are good if not the best for your application. The only other seals I'd consider going with would be Hurley but its not really going to matter.

I thought apex was a brand name. So that is actually the part name. Thanks for the info Stephen. That helps a lot. The engine I have is under warranty right now but I think the apex (notice the lower case as if I know what I am talking about. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...) seals are going/gone because the car just does not feel like it has much power to me. I am going to get a compression test this week or next to find out for sure.

twyatt do a compression test, you could just have a vaccum leak or something like that.. When you say your engine is under warranty does that mean it's been replaced before?

It is the original engine. It has ~64k on it right now. The warranty is until Oct. of 2003 or 90K miles, whichever comes first. I tried to get a comp test at a local high pro shop but the guy told me the reading would not be accurate because the machine was made to test compression of piston engines. The guy who bought the car before me got the warranty through the credit union where he got the loan. The warranty was transferable one time. The car is really running like **** right now. The idle is all over the place between the 0 and 1, the 3k hesitation sucks big time even when warm. I do not think my turbos are working correctly. SIGH!

But I love that money sucking pain in the ass, so I will stick it out until I get her right. There may be a vacuum leak. I do hear a lot of what could be considered a "whooshing" noise. I am hoping the engine just dies so I can get a reman.
