I've been doing an extensive amount of research on swaps, and though this might be a fun (and crazy) project to jump into.



I'm still in the initial info-gathering phase, but if any of you experienced rotary folks have any applicable knowledge on obvious pitfalls, problem areas, or general ideas, I would love to hear your input.



First: I know this isn't what people would call a "good" idea. I'm reticent to even post this on the BMW boards for fear of being burned at the stake https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...R#>/flamed.gif

I just feel that in my heart of hearts, a rotary powered 2002 track car is something i want to own. Sure, there are numerous "better" ways of making power (f20, sr20, turbo'd m10, various bmw swaps, etc) But I'm simply not interested. If a rotary engine is a madman's tool, I want to be that madman.



Second: What engine setup should I be looking at? I'm not looking to redefine Rotary Horsepower here, and 400 bhp is probably the highest hp I would consider for a track car. An honest goal is the mid 300's. I'll admit my knowledge of different rotary mills is lacking, and I'm not as well informed on the different keywords and engine codes thrown around here. I do know that I'd like to run a single turbo, and probably a standalone ecu. What engine should I be looking at?



Third: What are some obvious pitfalls I'm likely to encounter? I know the transmission tunnel is going to need some modifications to accept an RX7 trans, and the driveshaft is going to be a custom setup, but are there any other logistical issues you guys can see?

Streetported, single turbo 13b-RE (Mazda Japan/Aus only Cosmo) or -REW (3rd gen Rx-7 FD3S) would easily give you the power you want!

You wont/shouldnt get flamed here since everyone is pretty laid back and are gun-ho about projects of this type. If you dont get the awnsers you want in this particular room try the other rooms on this site there's always someone around who can awser questions.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the REW is a twin turbo right? From what limited information i've gleaned, turbo roters are significantly different than n/a motors, so its important to start from an engine designed to be boosted right? What is the availability/cost for the different engines? Is one more exotic or expensive to get?

REW and RE are twin/sequentially turbocharged. I believe RE has bigger exhaust ports than the RE. Turbo and N/A rotaries are definately significantly different, turbos have bigger exhaust ports for sure and the rotars themselves are lower compression than the N/As. A great motor combo imo would be a RE with s5 N/A rotors and GSL-SE eccentric shaft...



REWs are a tad more expensive than RE's but only by a couple hundred bucks 1300-1400CAD. 20bs are over 4k CAD just for a stock motor.

What model BMW are you planning on going with? I had a similar swap in mind but with an e36.

it says a 2002. its not a year. its an older bmw. late 70's from the looks. i dont know for sure. seen one the other day...

That's correct, I'm looking at a late 60's to '73 BMW, the model is 2002 (E10). They look very similar to 510's from that same era.



Is there any downside to running a Turbo II engine and trans combo? If i did yank the REW out of an FD i'd be going to single turbo anyway, I'm just not sure why there's a premium in price if they're a similar block.

just go with a TII set-up. the REW and tranny isnt worth the extra money. atleast thats my opinion.
