I got a 13-b rew coming here in a few weeks and this is my first Mazda and most certainly my first rotary so pardon my ignorance but if the kegs on the 2nd gen are the same as the third gen rew would the trans for the 2nd gen bolt to the rew? I'm not sure if the clutches are different or what not so any help would be appreciated.

First of all. Grats on the REW.. second of all.. Have you done the research to do this swap? I know when I started the SAME swap. I had nothing.. in fact.. I'm only slightly better off. But only cause people are generally nice about helping out.



Do you have everything you need to put the motor into the car?

Yeah I'm a tech by trade if your talking tools but if your talking parts, no I haven't gotten the engine yet and I just judging by a friends car and some research, fabrication doesn't worry me but I'm just trying to budget out what I want to buy at this point and I need some info on the basics from guys like you who have done this swap.

well the clutches are different, 3rd gen used pull type clutch while 2nd gen uses push type, so you need to use the corresponding clutch from the generation tranny your installing,unless of course you happen to happen a os giken pull--.push converter kit,.(most high end fd clutche are push type and you need to by an extra kit with a different arm and throwout bearing to utilize them)the 2nd gen tranny should bolt up easily! and better choice because the 3rd gen tranny does not have mounts on it , it utilizes a ppf which bolts it to the rear diff. so if you wanted to use the 3rd gen tranny you would have to fab and attach custom mounts to the 3rd gen tranny plus 3rd gen clutches cost more than 2nd gen clutches so why bother.(both trannies are both capable of supporting similar power), oh you need to get the swap mounts (on the forum or ebay) or plan on doing some serious fab work (rew has different mounting points for engine mounts then Any other 13b)

Mazdaspeed7 makes the engine mounts for the 13b-rew for an FC.



I'm in the middle ofthe same swap. I'm lookin for some tranny mounts for it.



I dont like doing the custom mod stuff myself, as I'll most likely just skrew it up.

So what you saying is the 2nd gen clutch can stay with the second gen tranny will mate fine to the rew flywheel? if thats the case, no worries except for the engine mounts I guess. I guess I don't fell like fabricating some tourque tube just to have the 3rd gen tranny, your right its not worth it. I'm just assuming this but I wouldn't think the trannys would be very different as far a electrical connectors, there isn't any extra speed senors on the rew trans is there?

To Mate a turbo transmission to the REW you need to get an Auto counterweight for the REW and the corresponding flywheel and clutch set-up for the Transmission ( t2 ).



But like I said.. Get ahold of Mazdaspeed7. He's the man with the technology for engine mounts.

Haha I love how deep this stuff gets, so the domestic NA trans is different from the domestic turbo Trans? sorry this is my first rex, if it is different then I might as well make the mounts for the rew trans and just use everything that comes with it. I guess I'm not shy about the fabricating but this is how i understand what is being explained to me



Rew will mate with a turbo trans as long as counterweight is added and the turbo clutch is used...



Rew will not mate at all with NA trans no matter what.



I guess what I'm saying is I have a body that I'm ripping the engine and trans out of and I want the rew into it and If I could use the NA trans then I would, but if not I'll just get to pratice my welding and fabrication.

actually, the whole n/a drivetrain is different, including the engine itself. if youre starting with a n/a car, i personally suggest using a t2 trans, diff, driveshaft, and axleshafts. but yes, the t2 trans will work fine with the rew. and as a few others have said, mazdaspeed7 makes the motor mounts, which will make the actual installation of the engine easier. good luck with youre swap! im about to start the same swap too. lots of pain and agony to come....

Edit: The transmissions are all interchangeable. But the REW puts out too much power for the N/A tranny, especailly if your going to mod it at all. The last thing you want to do is break a transmission a few days/weeks into driving the car. Best of luck!
