I test drove one the was at a local dealer back in the states, and that was it. I had wanted one for a long time, but after driving it I had to have one period! The car was way to expensive that time, but I did finally get one when I came to Japan. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png

my friend bought a red r1 in 96 so and after we drove it 2 hours home, he let me blast it up the street. the power delivery of the fd is totally unique and addicting.

My first experince driving a FD was the one I bought and own today. That was the first time I'd ever driven a turbocharged car too.. so, when the turbo's kicked in I wanted to nut. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

toddp31 07-22-2003 11:36 PM

If you drive one to almost has to get one. Good looks and speed

FD=empty bank account

rfreeman27 07-22-2003 11:41 PM

mine was the first I ever drove. I learned stick on it. I took a corner on a road near my house and exploded out of it. I was shocked at the way the car was able to transfer the power so nicely out of the corner. I was in love shortly after https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png

Damn, and I thought I was the only one who owns the first FD they've ever driven.

Fd3BOOST 07-23-2003 12:09 AM

My first tie with a FD was through Rikki.

My buddy told me that his little brother had bought a RX7.

I had thought rx7's were really expensive so I just had to go see it.

I called Rikki up and the next week to get a ride in it. It was already modded with a PFS Catback and IC.

I was hooked the second he boosted it.

I bought my first one about a month later.

vosko 07-23-2003 12:12 AM

i remember grinding the hell out of 5th gear when i test drove my car. of course he tells afterwards 5th gear syncro is shot https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png

rx7machine 07-23-2003 12:16 AM

Damn, when I first drove mine I was scared to get on it.. I didn't grind or miss a gear though..

TURBOX2 07-23-2003 12:18 AM

9BASE3 07-23-2003 01:14 PM

My friend got one in 94. A 93 V/R Touring... After I drove it I knew SOMEDAY I would own one.

I do now, and the thrill is still there.. Even though I have to play a tape of the exhaust revving while I sit in it and tug on the steering wheel in the garage... cause the engine is out... LOL

75 Repu 07-23-2003 01:23 PM

When I drive one, I will look for this post and Let yall know..

Danno 07-23-2003 02:32 PM

The first one I drove was when I was looking for my FD, that one acctually had something wrong in the tranny. I got so mad it just wouldn't go into gear and the seller ended up driving it back. BUt like a week later i drove the one I wow now. I started it is sounded so good and then when I drove it the clutch felt so much nicer than the first one. Before I drove the car off the lot for the test drive I told the guy I wanted to buy it.

When we got on the freeway the guy asked me if i was gonna get the turos going or not so that when I stepped on it for the first time. I had to buy it. I guess the feeling of the racing clutch is way better the the first car.

AVAN 07-23-2003 03:59 PM

I drove one for the first time when a friend of mine brought his to my house.

I was getting ready to go over my new girl friends house but when he said I could drive it that took prescedence over girls!!. after that I was hooked and bought my own a month later, with 4 flat tires, a blown motor and turbos for 11,800 https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/bigok.gif . the sad part of this story is that the day that I got mine his broke and he never fixed it https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...R#>/unsure.png it just sits in a dirt lot w\weeds growing through the hood https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...O_DIR#>/11.gif and no he said he would never sell it https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/blink.png

Mine was last year at about September. I was approaching the amount of money I needed to get one, so I went ahead to a dealer I found on a magazine add and drove one. It was a VR R1 stock, never grinded a gear, but I did stall it 10 seconds after I started it up.

The thing was that I was stunned by the engine sound and exhaust note that I just kinda drifted and let the clutch slip. Yeah, I know it was stock, but I was in shock and never heard anything that sweet!!!

Tom93R1 07-24-2003 01:59 AM

I drove all the way from Colorado Springs to Houston to test drive the first FD I drove. My friend and I took it out for about 15 minutes and while we were gone I launched hard from a light to make a left turn and thought "WOW", then I looked in the rear view and saw a cop fly up behind me. He saw me haul ass around that corner but I never broke the speed limit so he kept a really close eye on me for the next few blocks. Thank goodness the FD sticks so well to the ground, just about any other car would have been sliding the ass around and I would have had a ticket in somebody elses car! My bank screwed me when I tried to get that one though, so I had to wait for the next one to come along a few months later.

Dysfnctnl85 07-24-2003 12:04 PM

When someone on the board lets me drive theirs, I'll let you know what I think of it!

DUB 07-24-2003 01:31 PM

The one I bought is the 1st I drove also...I like the car for the looks, after the test drive, it was down hill...haven't stopped blowing cash on her. Girlfriend gets a little jealous, I think??? haven't talk to her in awhile...LOL!

Joe Flo 07-24-2003 05:25 PM

I couldnt drive my first one. I didnt know how to drive manual so the clutch was gone at the end of the week. So I got a 4-puck and I was good to go. Since then I want more speed!!

RX73rdgen 07-24-2003 09:07 PM

Wow. Lot's of people getting there first manual transmission experience in an FD so far.

I already had many years of experience driving a Miata. I had a supercharger on it but it never worked quite right with the supercharger. I took off the supercharger and thought about buying a nice turbo kit. Then I thought... hell if you want a faster car, BUY a faster car. I always like the FDs but I had heard there were a BITCH for reliability. But we Miata folks are spoiled when it comes to reliability.

So I started looking at some FDs for sale used in my area. The first one I drove I was like "Wow... this is faster than my Miata with only 1/3 throttle".

So I finally bought the 3rd one I test drove. It had hile miles but the price was right and it was a very well maintained stock one owner car.

So far it has given me no problems. I've done the reliability mods. But soon I will do the full stage 3 M2 modifications so we'll see if it blows up...

... the FD is fun but I still love the Miata! Great little go cart.

sandmans7 07-24-2003 09:55 PM

I've waited MANY years to get one, at it was well worth it while it was running. Hopefully I will get it running again soon. I had a 3000 gt that I thought handled very good, until I got my FD that is. It is a car that still turns heads no matter where you go.

the first FD i drove i bought also, drove 12 hours to go see it the day it was placed on autotrader. This wasnt my first experiance with manual trannys (i wasnt very good though) but it was the first manual car ive owned. it had has a 4puck act clutch and i wasnt used to it, and almost crashed into two guard rails coming out of a gas station do to almost stalling and punching the gas enguaging the turbos and losing traction in 45 degree weather were the tires didnt grip all that well. man i love this car. ive owned it for 3 months and probably will never sell it.

I just bought mine without even driving it! I have never driven an RX-7! I bought it sight unseen with the transmission out. Right now all I can do is sit in it and look at it.

1988RedT2 07-28-2003 10:07 AM

I drove a brand new one at a dealership in Ramsey, NJ back in 93 or 94 when my gf was selling cars there. I took it out solo one Saturday morning. The car, of course, was awesome. I really had never driven anything near that fast at that point. The acceleration in the lower gears was breathtaking, and I'll never forget the whooshing sound the car made at full throttle and high rpms. What really surprised me was the car's response in top gear at 60 mph. I was running down Route 17 and goosed it, and was doing 80+ in the blink of an eye. Not what I expected from a rotary and nothing like my old bone-stock RX-2.

beach 08-03-2003 11:04 AM

My first time was when my father and I were test driving the car in Ft. Campbell. He was heading back to the dealership and had to go over an interstate, he stopped before the on-ramp and let me drive it. I didn't know a dang thing about the car and I barely got on it. Even though the 2nd turbo was gone and the engine was about to choke...it was still amazing. (given I was 14 at the time...). My dad went back to the dealership the next day and got her...4 years later she sits with a new engine and some goodies in the driveway https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png
