I have 1 turbo that has siezed on my RX7. I am wondering if it would be a good idea to upgrade, buy new stock turbo assembly, look for a used stock turbo assembly or a rebuild kit (if they make one). So my questions are:

1. What is a good upgrade & what else is needed?

2. Do they make a rebuild kit & where can you get it?

3. Does anybody have a stock turbo assembly that is in good shape for sale?

If anyone has any other ideas I am open for suggestions at this point.

1. Turbos vary. You can go with upgraded twins, aka the BNR kids or '99 spec turbos. You can go with a single tubo kit. This vary heavily on what you wanna do. If you want to build a monster high HP drag beast and run alot of boost the T78 or T70, T88, etc are good kits. If you want a smaller, turbo with quick response look into the T04R series or the Gt35r. Will all of that stuff you're gonna need to upgrade fuel, computer, a ported motor isnt a bad idea, and upgrading you're intercooler is recommended.

2. Alot of people make rebuild kits, I've seen them between $150 and $500. This is pretty dependent on the housings not be cracked.

3. Search around on Ebay, here in the parts for sale section, and rx7club.com in the parts for sale section. You can find them in all price ranges depending on the abuse they've taken and miles on them.

I would like a 500HP RX7 when all is said and done......however I don't want to be w/o the car for too long a time or the major limiting factor the wallet! I was thinking about getting a rebuilt 13B from mazdarotaryengines.com & have them do the Stage 2 Streetporting. They come with a 2 year/24,000 mile warranty which is nice. I am just not exactly what route to go with the turbos. Is a single turbo conversion better than keeping it a sequenced twin turbo? I am leaning torwards the sequenced twin, but I am new at this and willing to be taught.

Not a guru, but that's a pretty ambitious figure, even for BNR or 99s w/porting. You'd probably need to go single with alot of other upgrades as well.

Personally, I like the drivability of the sequential twins. From what I've read, I'll probably go BNR when the time comes.

I think that I want to stay with sequencial twins as well. Is BNR just a brand of turbos?

93RX7R1 11-09-2005 09:25 PM

Nevermind the question about what are BNR's; I found them online. Does the 13B engine have to be ported or have any other mods if I get a set of the BNR turbos?

Its recommended that you run a ported motor, especially if you wanna make that kind of power. Not absolutely necessary, but it'll make things easier. 500rwhp in an FD isnt easy. I highly doubt upgraded twins are capable of that kind of power at a boost level that is relatively safe. If you want a somewhat reliable FD with 500rwhp I suggest a large streetport and single turbo. Something that will make that HP at around 20psi. You're also gonna need to spend a decent amount of money to support that kind of HP.

FYI:500rwhp in an FD feels and performs like 700rwhp in most other cars.

RE-Amemiya7 11-11-2005 05:18 PM

500hp on a modified twins setup is pushing it. To flow the kind of air you would need to make 500hp, you would have to turn up the boost to maybe 25-30+ psi range (not too safe). However, a T78 can more efficiently flow the same amount of air at a much lower psi. The T78 can easily make 500hp at roughly 20psi depending on the tuning. No matter what setup you want, making 500hp in an FD is going to take a decent amount of $$$. With 500hp at the wheels, don’t forget to beef up the drivetrain, that amount of power will do a real number on the rear-end.

However, I would love to see a FD make 500hp with a modified twins setup, it would really show the true potental of Mazdas' 13B design.

That's a small turbo to say it'll make 500 hp at 20 psi. GT42R will make 500 at 20+ psi...but a T78?

You need to tell us a lil bit about your car...is it stock now? If not, what mods does it have. To take a stock one and make it a single turbo.... you are looking at a TON of money. To make a 500hp FD... a small fortune, and it's not gonna happen on stock-ish twins. You are looking at an easy $10K in mods to even start thinking about building a 500hp FD.

Find someone in your area with a modded FD and go for a ride with them. I think you'll be surprised at how fast a 350hp FD is. Where are you located?
