Hello, I am new to the world of rotarys. I am trying to help my friend with his 3rd gen RX-7 to pass inspection. We have trouble shot the air control valve relay and pump, I am still perplexed because at low RPM's there is suction from the line coming out of the air box to the pump(the pump works, duh)...However at about 3500 RPM's the relay clicks and the suction on the hose stops. It is my understanding that at low RPM's air is pumped to the exhaust manifold and at higher RPM's air goes to the catiytic converter, yes...If I had to guess I would say that the ACV is at fault but, due to my newness on the system I am asking all of you smart people for help...thanx

it works like this.
at idle and up to around 2500-3500 rpms the air pump is on and the air is put into the exhaust ports. over 3500ish rpms the air pump is turned off (its got a clutch like the a/c compressor), and the air pump air is vented back to the air cleaner. under some conditions, decel and part throttle cruise some air might be put right into the cat. post up the emissions results, that might help |

thats way high, o2 sensor? is the engine a rebuild? if you put the rotor housings in backwards it will never pass smog. how is the cat?

i changed the o2 sensor that didnt work i even replaced my aftermarket down pipe with the stock one still no improvement the only thing is its a high flow main cat the car is bone stock and has never been rebuilt (at least not to my knowledge i have only had it about 2 years now)

hmm, maybe the vacuum lines are crossed at the acv?

how could i tell that?
