IM new here, so I guess I say HI first. Im from st.louis but im living in tokyo right now, and ill be back to STL in the near future. I have a 92 talon tsi, but im going to sell it, I was looking at rx7s before I bought the tsi, but didnt know enough at the time about them, and they were alittle more expensive then they are now. So now after realizing I dont want to deal with AWD, Ive decided to check out supras and rx-7s, but lately the rx-7 has really been drawing me in. So yeah, thats my bio:)



Now on to the post....... Because I was looking for an unbiased opinion on the differences between the rx7 and the supra, I asked over on dsmtalk.com. Well what I got was alot of people telling me how unreliable rx7s are, and a few people that suggested them whole heartedly. So after many hours of reading, I came across this board and figured i would ask a few questions here. If I get an rx7 with a rebuilt engine, and maybe a few mods, should it be able to last 2 years as a daily driver(after college ill have money for another car and/or more mods on the rx7) I was thinking about these:



Radiator

make the turbos non-sequential

do the ast overide

get a Water injection setup

downpipe

intake





I was thinking that the non-sequential route would negate the need for replacing all tubes in the nest. I have been intruiged with WI for awhile now, and I have read some great reviews from people using them on an rx7. That and the other normal stuff/maintnance and I think/hope I will be good to go.



I heard someone say something about how the rx-7 doesnt llike to be driven short distances, something about air bubbles in some lines? If thats true, is there a way to fix that? Also, just how hard is it to rebuild a rotary engine? I did all the work on the dsm, except rebuild the engine, Im pretty good at hands on type stuff, i loved working on the tsi.



And lastly, Would it be a good idea to try and get an new ecu/fuel controller right away? I dont know much about them, will it read my knock amt(if i decide to buy it before i sell the tsi),timing, air/fuel ratios? Or will I need to get some more gauges in order to use them? I know they are needed inorder to keep the air/fuel ratio in check, but is it really neccasary in a lightly modded car, would an s-afc work ?

Oh yeah, when i was talking about the fuel controller, I was thinking about the pfc, but wasnt for sure if that was the name....

If you get a rebuilt engine and those mods you speak of, it'll last longer than 2 years even while seeing some track time.

i know a couple dsm people and if you think those are reliable the fd will feel like home. the only difference is that instead if picking tranny parts off the ground, you get to look for apex seals in the exhaust

Great, Im excited, Im going to buy a WI kit from the group buy, will the dp be fine, or will i need cat back too? Also, I thought the pfc worked on all cars, looks like im wrong, i was hoping it did that way it would be a one time purchase:( So what about that new safc 2, that would work on any car, Im trying to find mods i can buy that arent car specific, incase for some odd reason i cant find an rx7 in my area......

Okay, let me try this. The PFC is for a lot of cars. BUT, wireing harnesses for all cars ARE NOT the same. SO, the wireing harness connector from the PFC to the FD has to be modified to fit. I'm not sure if doing the modification will render the PFC useless for other cars, but it should since we are completly cutting some of the connector pins off.



On top of all that, when you buy a PFC, you have to buy an FD specific one since PFC's come with specific maps for basic mods such as intake, exhaust, etc.

Let me see if I can put my .02 in.



First off Radiator would be my first mod because I live in Texas. It gets very hot.



Second would be Intake, pullies, exhaust.



The I would do a silicone vac job. I have never been in an non-seq rx-7 but I am wondering have you? People only do that to clear space. I don't really think it makes the engine last longer.



Getting rid of the AST is very bad from what I hear. I had Brian who is the rotary god were I live tell me on why it shouldn't be done. It is actually a common misunderstanding on why you should get rid of it. Just by an alluminum one. Getting rid of it would shorten the length of your engine.



Water Injection that early in the game prolly wont do much. I don't think you would have to worry about knock as long as you use 93 octane.



Adding a downpipe before a computer causes boost creep. My engine is ported with a downpipe so I get it all the time. I would waaait for the Dp until you had a computer first.



Getting a PFC from what I understand can control almost anything. I would get that if I planned on doing anything more then what I listed. We live by the 3 mod rule. After that get a computer or tuned ecu.



Check out some websites on the order of which to mods these cars. Their are quite a few. Follow them and you should have a happy car
