I'm looking to pickup a new daily driver to replace my protege and naturally I start looking for FDs, I have an '88 Rx7, but I wouldn't mind picking up an FD for some running around. Anyways...I found this guy abuot 20 minutes from me who just moved from TX. He is selling his '93 Silver w/ Red leather for $11k. I asked for some pics...and he sent them over. Now ...I'm pretty Rx7 Savvy...but don't pride myself on the FD interior knowledge that well.. the car has no sun roof, no wing, no lip (thus not an R1, that and it doesn't have the suede seats)...but it does have the red leather. I thought the red leather was a luxury option on the touring models only? The only interior parts that are red are the seats, door panels, and the rear subdivider..and the kick panels... Does that sound right? I'm just wondering if this guy maybe took a parts cars interior and threw it in another care to pass it off as "rare". I'm test driving the car on weds, but just wanted some ammunition to go in with. I mean $11k isn't a bad asking price, the interior is ok..needs some TLC, and the body is mostly ok, minus a ding in right behind the passenger rear wheel. It has 114K on the car and 35K on an engine he said was installed by a shop in houston. It does have a GReddy turbo timer, 3" dp, 3" hi-flo cat and catback as well as a racing beat FR sway bar..so his price isn't HORRIBLE, but it's going to take some $$ to get the car up to my par... what are your thoughts! Does this car sound legit, or a half-breed built from parts car?

you could always order whatever you wanted from the factory, but thats a base with a leather seat option or swap

I bought my '93 in Aug '92. At that time, all base models came with leather. I searched countrywide for a base car with cloth. Not to be had. Mazda optioned up the early deliveries for more margin. It wasn't well into '93 that you could get a plain jane base model with cloth seats. In fact, I'm not sure that you ever could with a '93. The '94 base cars came with the cloth seats.

At the time I was shopping the car, I saw several silver with the red leather interior. If I had found a silver with black, I would have bought it. My current '94 has the black cloth seats.

In any event, IMO, that's an attractive combination. Good luck.

it works like this;

93:

R1: better tires (bridgestone s01's), dual oil coolers, stiffer shocks, suede like seats, both spoilers, the strut bar, no sunroof no cruise control. only available in black yellow and red

touring: has the bose acustic wave stereo, leather, sunroof, rear wiper

base: has no sunroof, its got either cloth seats or LEATHER as an option.

94-95:

R2: same as r1, softer shocks, available in silver, black and red

touring: same as 93, except it has a glass moonroof

base: same as 93, except no leather option

PEP: popular equipment package, has leather, steel sunroof, and sometimes a cd player

Well I just drove the car around noon today. The paint was in better shape then I thought, but the body itself had many dings/bumps in it. The interior was in need of seats and some minor plastic parts...but otherwise clean enough. The engine's oil pressure was drastically low at idle and when I drove it..it felt very underpowered. It was supposed to have a new engine, and i didn't feel like low compression..it just felt like boost was low to non-existant. Very odd. Dirty engine bay, some vac caps missing on the TB, tape on inlet ducts for turbos...etc, needed some bad TLC. I told the guy I'm going to need to think about it and I'll let him know. He is asking $11k...i'm thinking closer to $6/7K with the amount of work it will take to get it up to par.

Oh yea, ABS didn't work and the tranny is going bad...4th gear was about gone, 5th gear synchro gave me some grief too...

He said it's a touring, it did have a sunroof, just no wing..so it's possible I guess...I'll keep you posted.

I'd avoid that unless you can get a boost guage to clarify if there is a boost problem or if the motor is just low compression.

If the compression test comes back OK, it still sounds like he'd have to come off that price......alot.
