i noticed that my passenger side steering rack boot was torn from the clamp area, and was wondering if it was replaceable. i would hate to incur the cost of replacing the entire rack at ths juncture in time, as i am working on a single upgrade.....

i just replaced mine. i was doing my single upgrade and i replaced it on thursday. it is really easy. i bought the part from mazda and it wasnt that expensive. took me maybe 20 minutes to do it. i also bought new grease. it cost a dollar. also the part you buy from mazda comes with everything you need to hold it in place.

what is involved in the replacement? is there a need to take the rack out?
thanks!!! louis |
no you dont need to take out the rack. you just need to take off the rim and then you just undo the rod that the dust but goes on. i wish i had a picture it would be super easy to understand what i mean. but over all it took like 10 minutes to change it out.

Do you mean take off the tierod end?
Or is it a split boot type thing? Like a cheap ass replacement cv joint boot kit? |
no you have to take off the tie rod end. MAKE SURE you count the turns so you can put it back without screwing up the alignment!!!

Cool! Geat tip.

Realize I am dredged up an old post here, but I was wondering how you separated the tie rod end from the hub/brake assembly. The WSM recommends an SST ("ball joint puller"), but my local Mazda dealer won't sell it to me. Will a simple gear puller or something like this: (Small Tie Rod Puller) work?
