this is on my new motor, still in the break in period, only have like 400 miles on her. everything was normal and then this happened. she'll crank really fine, but in order to get her to start i have to push the gas pedal. after she starts she runs fine. i can shut the car off and imediately start it up again normally when its hot.

any suggestions? i was thinking maybe the plugs have fouled since the car isn't tuned yet. but the plugs were pretty new right before the rebuild so i didn't change them. it does the same thing whether Idle Control is plugged in or not.

i'm single, with a big port and PFC. motor has only 400 miles, haven't taken it above 3000 rpms. previously the motor was stock port and i'm still running that map. car runs fine when started (up to 3000 rpm anyway, actually it is a bit jerky...)

thanks,

harrison

Did you make the adjustments in the pfc for the injectors?

vspecpgt 02-03-2005 11:14 AM

i didn't make any new adjustments, i'm using the same injectors and map as before. the only new thing is that the motor is new and has a big port.

same turbo, same injectors, same map, ect..... i asked a friend about retuning just for vaccum but he said it should be fine, and we'll just retune when its broken in.

I'd expect a change in starting ability with a 'big port'..

vspecpgt 02-03-2005 12:30 PM

i can see that, but the first ~12 times i started it to drive, it would just start right up.... it doesn't seem to catch now unless i give it gas. why the sudden change?

Sinful7 02-03-2005 12:37 PM

Honestly, my guess is that a rich idle is causing this.. I had an identical problem on a stock-port, stock turbo motor, when I screwed around with my idle maps (which were totally rich) I was able to start it quickly. And I'm kinda thinking the plugs are a little coked.

vspecpgt 02-03-2005 02:44 PM

what color should the tips of my spark plugs be? i just checked and they are very black, i would guess i'm just running rich, they should be a toasty brown color right?

i checked both T and L

i have the same problem with my car and hot starts... starting it when its cold... actually below 70deg F is pretty easy, and around 40 deg, it actually starts instantly. i have a feeling its more of a tuning problem rather than mechanical. it has to do with the temperature correction map, and a/f ratio i think

Sinful7 02-03-2005 03:02 PM

Brown to dark brown.. black is rich, black with lotsa grainy crap is way too rich.

Like I said it on the other thread, I think your plugs are the cause. I meant to ask you that last night. I guess I just figured you wouldn't put your old plugs back in if you had just rebuilt the entire motor anyways.
