whats the typical cost of shipping the car here.. freight and tax ?

whats the protocol when registering a foreigh car here.. id assume safety and emissions regulations would have to be met prior to shipping.. ?

we looked into it, legal registration is about 5k

I looked into getting a 2001 Rx-7 shipped over and legally registered to drive whenever I wanted to but found it to be quite the difficult task. A Type RS for less then $30,000 USD was mighty attractive even with the $2,000 or so it would have cost to have it crated up and shipped over. This was all looked at through japanvehicles.com and if you will notice, the USA is not listed as being able receive foreign vehicles.



There is a reason, actually many, for this including that the USDOT and NHTSA are such sticklers on importing vehicles it is ridiculous. On top of the approximate $32,000 USD it would take for you to actually get the car over to Amercan shores, you would have to have the car made legal by one of three certified companies in the US to perform the required modifications at an estimated cost of $4,000 to $5,000 USD. This, all on top of the fact that you have to put up the amount of the car in calateral prior to it leaving the docks as well as the NHSTA talking like you have to actually own the car before you have it imported, snuffed my hopes of being able to own a brand new RX-7. I checked into all of this a while back and some things may have changed by now; loopholes and what not.



I do know that there is a "Collector Car" clause where one can own a car not ever sold on American shores if it meets some pretty strict stipulations and is not driven more then 2,000 miles per year.

Like I previously stated, this was some time ago and with imported and grey market cars becoming increasingly desirable, the NHTSA may have alleviated or done away with some of these things, hopefully.
