Hey guys. I know it's quite normal that an FD without cats throws out some smoke after cold start. But when I start my car the air turns really blue behind me. As soon as it gets warmer the smoke is gone. Normal?

Thanks Dom

Well, sounds like you might be blowing just a hair of oil through the turbos. Normal as long as it stops after you warm up, and plant life behind you dosent die... https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

Yeah, only my neighbours have problems with this. I tried to explain...

Havoc 09-12-2002 11:48 PM

mine does the same and it is turbo related, goes away after warm up. I now push the car out of the garage before i start it so I dont stink out the place. :P

Keep the tank full if you premix. When I run mine low, it smokes like a crackhead...

I have a stock 94 touring that also smokes on cold start up. You mention without a cat it's common, because I have a cat and it smokes should I worry?

I don't think it's Turbo related cause i've also got an 86 n/a and since about a month ago it started blue smoking during warm up acceleration and and then stops. I don't know what it is though.

Lots of bue smoke on startup is usually one of two things. Turbos blowing oil by (I'm having this problem). Or failing oil contol o-rings. Either way you will eventually have to rebuild something. Good thing is that as long as you keep oil in it, you can drive it smoking for a long time.

Yeah... If it's smoking blue, at least you know the Apex seals are nice and lubed... And you'll get a little extra compression!

phinsup 10-11-2002 09:25 AM

It's normal.

Blue smoke = gas usually or a little oil

white smoke = water and disipates rapidly and doesn't linger around

black smoke = oil or way way too much gas

Rotary engines run super rich when they are on the cold start cycle and warming up because they get really shitty combustion when they are cold so it will smoke a little blue untill it warms up and can get good combustion.. The computer also dumps about 20-50% more fuel than normal on the cold start / warm up cycle

Thanks for all the comments.. I'll just keep it topped up and drive !!!!.. that's always the best bit..
