I've now started driving my FD on a regular basis. Today as I entered the parking lot at work, my car started smoking pretty bad.. so, I was like wtf, my temps were fine and I haven't even been dricing her rough lately.. The first thing I thought was, oh ****, I blew a turbo or engine maybe.. But not sure. I felt the upper intake manifold, all my hard pipes going to intake, etc. And everything was ice cold.. so, still didn't know what is wrong with it. But I have noticed a hesitation while driving just about as long as I remember having it(since last november) It's like when I'm close to having to change gears(up-shift or down-shift) my car starts to have this hestitating feeling to it.. With the hestitaion, I thought it may have something to do with spark plugs, I may need new ones to fix that problem, but not sure about the smoking.. could spark plugs have something to do with that?? I've been home from work just a little while.. I left my hood up to get some air in but my radiator is still going right as we speak. Any and all suggestions would be great. thanks alot

Smell the smoke. If it smells sweet and is white in color, you need a rebuild man. If it smells like oil and is blueish you are getting oil blowby somewhere. Could be the turbos...

Well, I really hope that isn't right.. because I'm smelling a sweet smoke... ****! And it doesn't smell like oil at all.. So, rebuild?!

Sweet smell = Cooland getting past the seals and into the rotor housing and burning. Not very good.

Next time, before you start the car, check to make sure the water is at the top of the filler neck. Leave the cap off and start the car. If you see bubbles in the water, it's exhaust gasses entering the coolant system via the dead seals. You will need a rebuild.

Perfect time to pull the motor, get a nice rebuild and go over EVERYTHING in the engine bay... Hoses, connections, grounds.... ETC.

Allright, I will have to check that out. But the thing is, it's been running fine.. so, why would it all of a sudden need a rebuild? I'm just trying to figure out all the possilbe things that could be wrong with it. Is there any other things that would result in a sweet smelling type of smoke? thanks

Well... It works like this:

Car will run great... Seal cracks letting in coolant. Car still runs great, just smokes. I SMALL bit of coolant will cause a friggin cloud..

The coolant in the combustion chambers will get pretty ugly if left go for a while though..

I've heard (Though I don't recommend) you can fight it with some radiator stop leak... But you're just masking the problem if you ask me.

I cant think of anything else that will cause the sweet smoke other than coolant... It's something you would have eventually had to deal with... But just think... A rebuild will go another 60K!!

Mine let go at 65... I know how you feel...

I know how you both feel...and I still smell my exhaust every now and again with 5k on my rebuild.

rx7machine 11-10-2003 01:48 PM

Damn, 65K.. wow. Well, since I can't rebuild it myself(don't have the equipment) guess I'll have to call up RotorSports Racing..
