Im a newbie , im seeking info on the reliablilty of the rotary design. im interested in purchasing my neighbors 93 touring edition rx7. My plans are to drive it daily to school and work. about 200 miles a week. will this be as reliable as say...a honda civic? RX-7 as reliable as a Honda Civic... NO! If you need a car thats reliable on a daily basis DO NOT get a turbo rotary. They can be reliable if there maintained properly but theres still always a risk with these cars . I daily drover mine for two years with out major problems but it had a new motor and was stock. |
High performance cars aren't meant to be reliable.

High performance cars aren't meant to be reliable. Looked after , should be no problem. Drive it like you stole it , things break and wear out real fast. |
I personally wouldn't try without a reliable backup car.

Definately not a car to get unless you have a cheap back up car. Look at it this way, if the car breaks down, can you affor to have it re-built? An do you have a means to get around while the car gets fixed? I hate to dump on your dreams man. But look at it this way, I daily drive a '93 R1, had the engine rebuilt about a year ago, turns out the guy I bought the car from never put the engine back together right. Took my car into KDR and they re-built my engine for me. I have not had a single problem since, I change my oil and filter every 2k miles, and I put about 300 miles a week on my car, it's right now at about 115k miles, and it's still running strong. Granted, I need to replace the struts and springs, but everything else is working fine. An yes, I have a backup car.

Its all in how its built and tuned(tuning is VERY important). Ive been driving/railing on my FD for about 2 years now. The guy I bought it from( a good friend of mine) built and street tuned it himself. The engine has been going for well over 4 years at 400+hp. So I have to disagree and say yes, they can be reliable, if built and maintained right. But I do have to agree with the fact you should have another car just in case.
