i wanted to replace my own clutch, i just picked up the ACT street strip kit, it comes with everythin i need (pressure plate bearing clutch etc) but im a little scared as to going this deep into my car. im all for it but i dont know if there are any special ways to pull the tranny down, like will the pilot bearing get stuck if i pull at the wrong angle or better yet where does the tranny disconnect from the engine.

i just need someone to say,

"its not that bad just use the shop manual and dont forget to ________ when lowering the tranny and _____ when unbolting and check the ______ b4 u put everything back together"

haha so yea please gimme some advice, or if u happen to be in the NY area and wanna head on down to long island and help me out i can hook u up with food/drink hell ill even pay u (not as much as a shop but make it worth ur time)

hit up my cell if u can help my sorry ass haha (516)578-6108

thanks

HARD...TAKES LONG TIME...

papasmurf 08-30-2003 11:14 PM

not too hard to disconnect things, itll take a while though some of the tranny bolts are HARD to get at. ( top of the trans tunnel) usually people use a long screwdriver to disconnect the trans from the engine through the trans inspection door. i havnt done it myself but i have disconnected my trans before (just never cracked the two apart).

shouldnt be that hard to do, and will save u a LOT of money. (some place quoted me 500 just for labor, i ended up paying 185 and a great turn around time to get it done correctly..)

we did my clutch on my FD in two hours! its not bad at all. the biggest pain in the ass is releasing the pressure plate ring.... man that sucks https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png

andynogo 08-31-2003 06:41 AM

Yeah, what about putting it back together- how hard is it to seat the pressure plate ring/clip?

vosko 08-31-2003 08:16 AM

reassembly is pretty easy putting that ring back on is the hardest part

chase78 08-31-2003 11:00 AM

ACT is good stuff

suggestion... go with a stainless steel breaded clutch line to try to keep as much pressure in the line as possible. Since its not a multi disc system your going to be giving you left leg a health work out from now on. AND IT ONLY LIKE 65 bucks

correct me abouthe price if i'm wrong some one. go to rx-7store.net

chase78 08-31-2003 11:06 AM

Have a friend witha 19mm socket hold the front drive bolt in place while your untorque and torqure the new clutch. also get some break disk cleaner

(1 buck)and spary the fly wheel down before installing the new clutch.

good luck

thanks im gonna run to some of the local tranny shops see what they can do i wanna have it in by the 6th so i can give it a nice wear in at raceway park for street battles. so far the price of the day is 325 well see if i can do any better

papasmurf 09-01-2003 02:41 AM

go to trans only shops, they are always the best. i took my car a whole 1.5 min away and got the cheapest price. 185 is pretty damm good! keep shoppin and youll find a good place with a good price. otherwise, do it yourself.

i didn't think seperating the relase collar from the pressure plate was hard at all... push the clutch fork all the way back so it is seated all the way in the pressure plate, insert the screwdriver between the bearing and the little collar on the pressure plate... and while releasing the pressure on the clutch fork gently pry the two apart... real easy once i figured out how...

if you have low miles on your clutch, can you just use emory paper on the flywheel? and can you use the same pilot bearing... the car has about 20,000 on the stock clutch and thats why i'm replacing it (for a friend)... but he would rather save the money buying all the sst's if he doesn't need to... what do you guys think?

clutch = total pain in the ass.

try putting that tranny back in without an alignment tool. dear god, what a nightmare.

charliegt 09-02-2003 12:03 AM

I have an ACT s/s kit and I love it (I can chirp third with no trouble, and I have new Toyo T1S tires). The pedal is harder to push but it makes your leg stronger https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png - It isn't too bad of a job, the biggest problem is getting the car high enough off the ground to do it. I needed my clutch in the middle of winter and the garage floor wasn't very inviting due to the temperature so I took my car to the RX-7 store in Columbus. They installed the clutch for about $270 in labor. They also had the best price around on that particular clutch. It was done and ready to go in less than a day.

damm it seems in the onl one who went with the wrong clutch.. act 4 puck, very hard to press clutch, and it engages harshly, o well after relearning stick shift, i can daily drive my car.. haha. if you drive on the street, make sure u go for a disc type clutch.

MazdaMike 09-02-2003 10:08 PM

yea i didnt go with a puck setup, supposedly sprung puck makes it more streetable but i went with a normal disc. i got a price quote, 300 to resurface f/w and install the new clutch, im gonna go for that as soon as i get the money

vspecpgt 09-03-2003 07:06 PM

looking back... the whole job wasn't really that hard... we just took apart the tranny today and replaced the 5th gear synchro... whoo hooo!

apexkw 09-03-2003 08:42 PM

lol harrison we are just to good thats all. i mean come on....that synchro was but mere childs play!
