unbolt the DS from the rear diff.... and then slide it out of the tranny

Drain the tranny first, though. Oil will pour out the back if you don't.

Yea and gear fluid is about the worst smelling **** in your car. Not to mention it's a hard smell to get rid of.

P'cola FD 12-26-2004 07:18 PM

Dave you have no idea. To make a long story very short, one awfull night, a few years ago, I had about 3 quarts dumped all over my head and body, eyes open and everything. I was wearing a work uniform at the time, and even after being washed by the uniform company 15 times, the smell never went away.

GreyGT-C 12-26-2004 09:59 PM

i love the smell of gear oil in the morning...... smells like victory.

Just undo the wireing harness from the car, and leave them attached to the engine/transmission. Make life alot easier! They you can pull the engine without ever taking off the intake, or going after plugs... Well alot anyways https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

And I always just leave the driveshafts bolted to the diff... It won't fall, because it sits in the PPF brake.

Also when you pull it, unless you completly remove your PPF brace (which is more work than needed...) All 4 studs on the transmission that hold the PPF brace unscrew/remove) The upper two are held into place by a retainer/10mm bolt. It's kinda hard to get to, but it you go threw the shifter hole, that is the easiest.

Then the lower two are threaded into the transmission. I think it was a 6/7mm, but the open end of a wrench fits the end of the stud. Just screw them out, and after you get those two out, just pull the engine/transmission straight forward! No jerking, or removing the PPF brace https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png

questions.. when removing the engne and trans as a unit you only need to remove the front 4 ppf bolts and the engine mounts and the drive shaft should slip right out? any other connectors other than the 4 attached to the trans that need to be disconnected? thank you

GreyGT-C 12-28-2004 08:11 PM

i remove all 9 PPF bolts/nuts and remove the PPF completely... gets it out of my way. There are 4 bolts at the rear of the drive shaft to remove and the rear will drop down, and then the front will slid out.

If you remove the engine harness with the engine/tranny (i recommend this) you only need to disconnect the main harness going thru the firewall under the ABS pump... and a few connections on the drivers side of the engine.

amp 12-28-2004 09:25 PM

use a level with your picker..

it will help distribute the load when unloading with the tranny....

HobbeZ 12-28-2004 09:38 PM

it warns that you need to replace the 8 nuts and 1 bolt in the process, is it worth replacing? what advantages is it to remove the entire ppf frame fromt he car according that that http://www.alexwan.com/rx-7/journal/012103/012103.html

website it mentioned only 4 nutes were needed to removie the engine and tranny.. trying to remove as little things as possible to not get confused where everything goes when come time to reinstall. thank you

GreyGT-C 12-28-2004 09:51 PM

considering that stock PPFs crack frequently... it'd be a good time to remove it completely, clean it up and inspect it. I've never replaced those nuts and bolts before... never had one work it's way loose either.

You also don't have to worry about trying to support the PPF if you need to move the car while the engine/tranny is out of it.

rfreeman27 01-02-2005 09:10 PM

remove the slave

then take a long screwdriver and push the collar lip towards the pressureplate. It can be a pain, but ive found that taking out the slave makes the job WAY easier.

GreyGT-C 01-02-2005 10:10 PM

OR.... if that ends up kicking your ass (like it does mine most of the time). remove the bottom access plate on the bellhousing, and remove the 6 bolts holding the pressure plate to the flywheel. It's a lil time consuming, but it works if the release collar pisses you off enough, and you don't damage the collar this way either.

P'cola FD 01-02-2005 11:30 PM

For releasing the wedge collar, I just take off the plate on the bottom of the bell housing, get some light up there, and pull it back with a long flathead screwdriver. With some light, it really isn't hard.

For getting the collar to hook back up, I take a big screwdriver, stick it into the hole where the slave cylinder goes, and press on the fork really hard. Then, look up through the bottom hole, and see if it's connected.

rfreeman27 01-03-2005 12:42 AM

Yeah its not too bad. For some reason removing the slave makes it the collar pop really easily. I guess there is no pressure on the fork?
