hey guys i am new to this forum soo if you could help me out with my problem....i currently own a 1993 t78 single turbo touring edition rx7....and i have an oil leak....the car is on jackstands in the garage now and i pulled the transmission heat shield off and there was oil sitting in it and a little bit of oil around the garage floor....i cleaned all the oil up and cleaned under the car....started her up and let her run for a bit...then i checked under the car to see where the small oil leak was coming from and it looks like it is dripping somewhere between the engine and tranny....i think it might be a rear main oil seal that needs replacing and the car has 108,000 miles on it but engine and turbo are new so just shoot me some suggestions and opinions on what i should do to diagnose this problem....thanks a lot guys peace out

you sure its not coming from the filter or the fitting on the block below the filter?

gdnimr0d 11-09-2003 06:05 PM

you are talking about the oil filter pedastal....umm i dont think soo oil isnt leaking from that high up and its not coming from the oil cooler lines either so its somewhere right at the bottom of the car...oh yeah nice picture and qoute ahah eating a brownie...you know some of those little girl scouts were hot when i was younger haha peace out

Yeah.... https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png

Its probably the rear seal then, just like you thought.

gdnimr0d 11-09-2003 06:15 PM

well then can any one explain to me how to fix it??? or does anyone else reading this think it is a different leak? please help if you can

andynogo 11-09-2003 06:51 PM

Yeah, real simple to fix.

Gearbox out, flywheel off, replace seal.

Get the manual online at here and see how to do it.

Best if you have a hoist and if it's your first time, 2 days to do it!

It could also be an oil pan leak in between the engine mounts. You still have to remove the tranny to get to the leak, but you don't have to remove the flywheel.

ANDYNOGO!! where on the website link that you posted does it show me the diagram of how to get to the rear main oil seal....cant seem to find it thanks....oh and how would i diagnose whether it is the oil pan leak between the engine mounts IGY??cuz i dont want to do the rear main oil seal fix if i dont need it soo i just need multiple suggestions

If you pull the tranny and there is no oil around the rear main seal it is good, and its probably the oil pan. I took everything out just to find that it wasn't the rear main seal, because I didn't look behind the flywheel first.

ANDYNOGO!!

Yeah, yeah, you don't have to shout!

At the iluvmyrx7 website, the complete workshop manual for the FD is there. You have to download it all and then look in the engine section. Replacing the rear main seal is really easy, just hard to get there. Gearbox out (it's described in the manual transmission section of the manual) and note here that you may have to unbolt the pressure plate from the flywheel before removing the tranny if you can't pop the circlip.

You can then remove the flywheel (I await your next post titled "How the F#@$k do you get the flywheel off?")and pry out the old rear main and put a new one in.

Word of warning- if you do take the tranny out, make 100% sure the clutch circlip is back on right or you will have to R&R the box again...

Take the inspection cover off the bottom of the gearbox, shine a torch up and see if you can see the oil leak from up and behind the flywheel (I don't know if it is easy or not- you may have to use a mirror).

As IGY said, it could also be the oil pan at the engine mounts. You may want to clean everything with brake clean or similar first and then run the engine with the car on a hoist and see if you can locate the leak. If it's the pan, you need to lift the motor or drop the subframe a bit to get at the bolts. You'll need to take of the motor mounts and pan, clean everything so it's spotless, then chuck on wads of RTV grey silicone or similar.

OKAY!!?? Sorry, okay? https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png
