I've never owned an RX-7, but I am in an interesting position where I need to make a decision about purchasing one in the next couple days. It's a 1993 silver RX-7 with low miles.

My question is this- How expensive are these cars to modify? Basically, I have about $6k to spend on horsepower, and I was wondering how much I can get with that amount. The catch is that I need this car to be reliable and street worthy. Is this possible? What mods are most cost effective and reliable in my price range?

Thanks

a streetable higher HP car is very obtainable. To increase reliablity you should think about cooling system upgrades such as a new radiator, intercooelr, aluminum AST tank, ect. You should also remove the restrictive heat producing pre catyletic converter and replace it with an aftermarket downpipe. this will also make your under the hood tems go down.

As for performance you should have enough money to make a quick FD, full exhaust, intake and ECU will give you a quick ride.

good luck.

Look at Bobby working the crowd, https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683785.gif

He is generally correct. If all things are good with the car and you dont have to many repairs, (boost leaks, cooling issues) then you should do ok with that amount of cash to spend. Be aware that it is not uncommon for a 3rd gen to loose the engine coolant seals at 60k miles. Mine did https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png You may find this link informative in that reguard. http://www.fd3boost.com/Troubleshoot_oringfailure.php

Losing a coolant seal means that you have to either replace or rebuild the engine.

A reman engine will cost you at least 2k from Malloy Mazda. If you have to pay someone to install it then obviously the cost would be even more.

Fd's are fairly pricey to own, mod and maintain though. Parts are pretty pricey(just look in some of our sponsers online stores) and Repairs can be expensive too unless you are handy with tools and have some mechanical skill.

But 4k can buy you a ton of bolt ons so theoretically speaking you could have a 12 sec car. Good luck and look through a few of these links..

That 6k should be spent to keep the car alive, IMHO
