I just bought a 1993 RX-7 from a local guy on Friday. The engine was rebuilt 33,000 miles ago, with alot of upgrades done to it. (425hp on race gas). I know nothing about the rx-7. lol Ive driven it this weekend and to work today (400 miles) I checked the oil this morning before going to work and it was really low down to the tip of the dip stick. I added 1 1/2 quarts to it. Drove to work (170 miles) and when I got home I had to add another 1 1/2 quarts to it again. It smoles when I start it but stops after a few minues. Im talking to a friend of mine that is saying that it could be running so rich the oil is getting into the crankcase and thinning the oil out?

It also has a problem starting after 20 to 30 minutes of driving. It will crank and sound like its going to start and then die. There is a strong smell of gas which leads me to belive that its flooding. Ive tried the recommended running it to 3000 rpm for 10 seconds and then turning the ignition off.

I know this is a vague description of my issues but any help would be appreciated.

please ask if you need anymore info.

I would suggest that you change the oil and filter immediately and do a compression check on the engine. The hot restart issue sounds like leaky injectors, possibly combined with low compression. After checking the compression, I'd go over the fuel system, starting with an injector cleaning.

Also check your plugs for signs of excessive oil consumption. Have you been under the car? Is it leaking oil?

Does it have a PFC? I'm guessing he has some sort of aftermarket ECU. I'm also guessing its tuned to 400+ and tuned to be safe. Also with larger injectors?? Fine out what kind of inj. and tune. If anyone in your area with wideband, I would check your A/F.

It could be because of lower compression... Usually low compression engines are harder to start. But also could be that you are running rich (by smell and sound of it) and just might need some fine tuning.

How bad does it smoke? Get on the boost and see if you see smoke while boosting. Or smoke while driving. If it does, than you have other issues ( turbos or oil contol ring in your engine). You might be also be loosing oil because you have a leak (oil pan). But anything important, you want to see if oil is buring while you are driving.

Call the guy who you bought it from and ask him what kind of mod he has done. Also who tuned the car. Good luck!

From what Kevin has told me that Chris at Rotory Performance in Garland TX has done all of the work on it. ive been talking to him quit abit this week. I looked at all the plugs tonight Ill post some pictures of them. When the car is started up there is a continious grey/blue smoke. When it is first started its smokes pretty good but dies down quit abit when idling. When traveling down the road it seems to disapate but when under boost its alot of blue/grey smoke countinous according to a friend of mine. he said that when driving normal down the road he could not notice any smoke. I hope this makes alittle since..

You might want to check out the turbo for thrust play . Could be oil seal .

I agree check the turbos.

Also take the the two hoses on the intake elbow just before the primary turbo and see if they have oil in them, I'll tell you later whats wrong if the top one does. But the bottom one goes to the filler neck, and would just be from the crankcase(should be clear with normal driving).

Also I would say the plugs look pretty normal to me.

Chris, I think this guy has a single turbo.. Not sure if he has those two hoses you are mentioning.. But I agree with SPICcnmGT..

Ahh.. ok, but he still probably needs the two hoses hooked to a vaccum source since one pully from the crank case, and one is for the oil injection nozzles. I've heard people that don't have them, but IMO if mazda had it set up like that, then they did it for a reason.

I agree Chris! I just don't remember seeing that on single turbo set ups.. ie nipples on the intake.

Ive got some more pics and updates when I can access everything again. there is alot of oil underneath the engine by the oil pan and rear main seal area. I pulled the intercooler tubes and downpipe and didnt find anything of concern. I will post some pictures up tommorrow if I can get to them.
