Hey guys,

should finally have the FD running AGAIN tomorrow or saturday, sunday I'm going to pickup a mazdaspeed hood for it that I got a pretty good deal on, in my opinion.

I was just wondering if anyone has some pics of there car with it on, and also whats everyones experience with it in terms of temps and such? does it do a good job or is there minimal difference in temps?

Not my car, my friend Paul's (rotorbrain on the 'club')

He said it keeps it a little cooler, but I don't know.

Doesn't your buddy Martin have one? He could tell you all about it. I had one for a while. I did not notice any large temp drops. If you remove the weather stripping along the top edge of the firewall you will get about the same venting effect out of a stock hood. Honestly the hood is more for looks than anything else. I kind of got tired of the rice boy look after a while and ditched it. To each their own.

I think the MS hood (or a replica) is one of the more tasteful vented hoods out there. Not over the top like so many others.

Benefits IMHO are two-fold. Venting after shut down with the fan mod should help reduce baking of all the plastics etc. It should also increase flow through you radiator and IC, since it would reduce hi-pressure under the hood while moving.

Downsides: I've never seen an aftermarket hood without fitment issues, no matter how expensive. Some fit better than others, but it boils down to what you willing to live with. And I've seen some of the less expensive CF clearcoats yellow with age and/or develope etch marks as if water was left on the finish and dried in the hot sun. I'm pretty certain UV plays a role in the first, not certain what causes the second.

itll reduce pressure but the ideal setup would be if they had constructed the opening a bit higher up on the hood...

right now as it sits.. the opening is not in the ideal flow path where the air could exit... but might help in air circ for the block..

jehan babies his ride so that hood should be in excellent condition..

jehan? im guessing you know who im buying the hood from? Never got his name, just his screen name.

but anywho, yea its a carbon fiber one, he says it has some yellowing, it seems to be a very small spot, to me at least, near the windshield.

Not a big deal to me, I'll put pics up of what my current stock hood looks like and you'll all be like "ohhh, yea id buy a new one too" seriously i gotta get pics of my fd up online, so many scratches and gouges...but the body is still straight thank god.

As for the yellowing, it doesnt bother me cause i'm just going to get it painted white with the rest of the car sooner or later (once i stop having problems)

in other news, my t04z has arrived, gotta pick it up from fedex after 5pm today....anyone need a t04r freshly rebuilt after a whopping 20 miles of use?

FWIW, when the time comes, make sure they block sand it really good, otherwise the CF weave tends to shows through.

you are gonna have to use ALOT of primer/sealer on that hood before you paint it also. When we painted mine, we primed it several times and blocke dit back out. No sign of weave in it at all.... After it was painted... you can still see the weave when the light hits it just right.

As far as it helping vent hot air... i noticed a big difference in my temps with it. The raised edge in front of the holes create a low pressure area which sucks the air out of the engine bay alot better than the ones that basically look like you just cut a hole in the stock hood.

If you are just using this as a street car... i think its a non-issue anyway... especially with all of the stock turbo **** removed.

Go for it bud, I'm still torn on trying to decide between that hood, the AD9, and believer it or not the Scoot hood.

teknics 05-12-2007 08:13 AM

sweet7: yea i saw your topic in the exterior forum lol when i was looking for more pics of the mazdaspeed one.

greygtc: sell me your front bumper, your car is so badass, i love it. As for a street car, thatll be its duties for a short while, until i build up the project budget, i put a lot of effort and money into getting it back onto the road in only 3 months (the car was sitting, blown motor and bad harness for 3 or 4 years) I think I'm gonna build this one specifically for the road course since my t2 would probably be a bitch to take too many corners in lol.

as for painting it, rob's gonna paint the car for me, so we'll see how it goes, i trust him though especially after the results he produced on my t2. When you say the weave shows through, do you mean like almost a ghost weave effect? i think I actually might not mind that lol.

anyway, im picking the hood up on sunday for $400, hopefully in the dodge ram, otherwise im going to have to get creative with how to get it home.
