I was wondering for those of you who have replaced the stock bock w/ filter w/ a high performance cone filter removing the box, is the heat going into the turbos from the filter greater since the air is coming from under the hood where it is heated up. When I open my hood of my base 94 it is much hotter than my FC. So i was wondering why it would be benificial to put a performance cone filter behind where the factory box sat. The only reason I am asking is due to the heat it seem that any air you could obtain from in front of the intercooler would be much better than behind. Thank you sorry if this question seems dumb.

Don't look too much into it. An open air filter will increase power. Replace your precat with a downpipe to get rid of some of the heat. fabricate or buy an intake system with a heat shield if you're really **** about it. I wouldn't worry too mcuh about it. What mileage do you have on the car?

The car is stock w/ 62,200 mile on original motor. Compression is good on all rotor faces. I just blew the secondary turbo, so I am replacing those w/ a spare set I have today. I was wondering about the precat and cats I figured they were probably getting pretty melted. when you add the downpipe do you have to get a boost controler to eliminate boost spike due to a free flowing exhaust, or is that not a problem. I was looking into the Racing Beat intake that removes the stupid plastic piece for the air to flow into the air filter. Thanks for all the info

Underhood temps on an FD are very important and cool air will increase your engines output. The stock box is too restrictive, but it has cold air coming into it. The best solution is to remove the OEM box, replace with a high quality filters and to get the hot air out of the engine bay and colder air coming in via a vented hood.

With just a downpipe you'll be safe. If I could only have one mod on my car, the downpipe would be it. The precat starts clogging as early as 50K miles. I reccomend putting a fiberglass wrap on it, also. This will keep more heat inside the pipe, and less heat in your engine bay. Undercoat the wrap with a bonding spray, put the wrap on, then install the downpipe. let the car run for about ten minutes. It will smoke as the spary bonds the fiberglass wrap to the downpipe. It costs about 30 bucks to do, and is well worth it for the amount of heat it keeps off your engine and turbos.
