this thread is kinda for jspecracer7, but is open to anyone with $0.02. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

i talked to paul and he says there are 3 ways to go about importing 92-95 fd's.

1. if you are military you can claim its yours and they will ship it over here and skip customs

2. import it as a race car; to do this you may need somesort of competition licence and maybe race schedules too

3. ship it through customs; its not really hard. it is a ton of paper work. it has to pass federal emissions (the only difference is the ce light), it also has to pass the d.o.t. but probably the most you have to do is tires, maybe headlights. you also have to pay a couple of bonds along the way, it should cost about 5k

4. buy a wrecked car with title. put vin#'s on yours. ship to mexico drive across border in dead of night

From my understanding of the military aspect, they will not ship the j-spec cars back anymore. About 2 years ago, it was easy, but now they're not allowing it. I have to find some way to get this stupid car back, even if it's for drag racing only https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png

Shipping an rx-7 from Japan is a great idea its right hand drive and cost much less then ones in the us.

But

There is the milatary way they way they get around customs is that all the cars that they can ship over came original from the us anyways and so meet US DOT.

Race car way is a better way but is the most expensive because it either has to have Corporate sponsorship and owned or co owned by that corporation or take the car apart engine/ trans, body panels, and doors. More or less you have to have the car complete disassembled and not have been register in the country of manufactured.

Customs. DOT air bags, seat belts, seats, body vin #number locations and type, all the windows pretty much, and if you get any thing above a 95 all the internal safety system like body structures frame strength are not test in the US and those do not comply.

For example there group wanted to ship over Skylines so what they had to due was crash test three of them $30,000 plus testing $150,000 each and then maybe they might let them in. did I mention that you have to have special permission by the EPA

To even start the car in the US.

I know all of this because I tried to do the same thing and pretty much if I wanted to ship one over I would pay about 15,000 to 17,000 extra plus shipping ($2000 or so)

If you reply want an rx-7 just get one from that states it much easier and cheaper.

That's good information.

Look at this...

Why not import a new RX-7 as a show car? No longer in production and the rotary engine factor should be significant enough to qualify.

You only get 2500 miles per year...I don't think that I put that on my FD now...but you could probably figure out ways around this. B)

jspecracer7 08-19-2002 09:51 PM

That would be nice, but according to the website, if it was a production car in the US in XXXX years, then it won't be eligible for importation...like my FD. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/angry.png

j9fd3s 08-19-2002 10:34 PM

yah, the showcar thing wont work. how long do you have before you have to come back?

mike

mmaragos 08-20-2002 04:42 AM

Doh. Need to have a '96 or newer. Any year without production availability in the USA.

Trade up!
