I bought a mint lookin 93 rx7 with only 8000km on a refreshed engine with 3mm seals, Ive driven it for only 3000km of those.
Just today I was idling at an intersection when a horrible loud grinding noise started up under the bonnet, it was really loud. I pulled over to the kerb and had the car towed home. Have I blown the motor? It still runs but the noise is gut wrenching. I cant get it looked at till Monday and im gutted.. |
can you give some more details. my guess would be something with the flywheel ? or clutch. i wouldn't assume its the engine. if you are gonna take it somewhere make sure they have very good feedback

Ok, the car was originally an auto and was converted to manual by a previous owner, Im told the car has a lightened flywheel.
The noise is a very rough grinding sound with a bit of squeaking, the vibration thru the transmission is severe. It makes no difference whether the car is in gear or not, clutch in or out. When it happened first I was sitting in first gear with the clutch in, letting the clutch out and driving the short distance to the kerb (20m) made no difference to the noise. Vosko, I appreciate the reply is there any further info I should supply? |
hmmm unfortunately it could be anything from a bearing in the tranny to the clutch....... there is no way to pin point the problem. my car made a weird noise cause i broke the tranny :(

u could turn engine with a long half inch rachet at front pully and feel it.

Towed my car to the workshop this morning, my friendly rotor mechanic had a brief listen to it running and said its something f**ked in the clutch assembly.
The conversion to manual was done by the same workshop, so i guess they know what to look for. I hope to get a full diagnosis this arvo, after theyve pulled it apart. Nice to know its not the motor itself. <phew> Will post details as they come to hand.. |
Well me cars all fixed! Crankshaft bearing had collapsed. NZ$26 part. I am one happy chappie.
