Finally got my FD that I bought a month ago running great except for an odd boost problem.



My boost spikes badly when I suddenly hit the gas... up to 15psi according to my Autometer gauge I just installed. If I slowly give the car has it holds about 12psi at most any rpm. A bit too high.



As a bit of an experiment I completely removed the restrictor pill from the wastegate actuator line (not the pre spool line). This is supposed to lower your boost right?



Not in my case! It made no difference. The boost pattern is identical and still boost is too high. What gives? I have a couple ideas:



1) Bad waste gate? (I doubt this)

2) Inaccurate Boost Gauge? (maybe)

3) The turbos on this car where replaced at the dealer under warranty in late 1998. Could they be the new style with the restrictors built in?

4) Some type of problem with the mechanism (what's it called?) that cuts off boost from on of the seconardy turbo at low rpms?



My car is unmodified except for a downpipe.



Any idea?

My guess is either 3 or 4. I'm not sure how you tell if the pills are built into the turbo - I'm sure someone else can answer that. If that is the case, you'll want to remove the precontrol pill from its vacuum hose too. If the problem is 4, then it is probably a result of 3 - i.e., the dealer screwed up the vacuum hoses that control the sequential turbo control system when they installed the new turbos. You can find a nice colored diagram of all the vacuum hoses somewhere (I'll try to find a link). You could make sure all your hoses and check-valves are in the right place.



The problem could also be your wastegate solenoid. It's one of the two in front of the upper intake manifold (you probably only need to remove the elbow going from the y-pipe to the intercooler). The shop manual tells you how to check the solenoid.

My vote would be number 3.

either 2 or 3 i have yet to see an autometer gauge that wasnt off by 2 psi. you can tell you have the new style turbos because they have gold colored actuators

Well... may actuator don't appear to be gold. Just sort of a dull grey. So this means I don't have the new turbos with built in restrictors right?

This has me wondering a similar question, what gauge is recommended anymore? I've been running an autometer boost gauge for a while now, and I know it's off, the problem is I have no idea how much. I'm planning to do a fair amount of work with tax returns this year, and i think a new boost gauge might just be one of the items coming my way. Preferably, i'd like to be able to keep it in the autometer a-pillar pod that I have now.

Well, I also think its #3. Pull the vac hose off and see if the nipples only have a very small hole in them. If so you know thats the problem. You can prob drill it out or maybe cut off the end of the nipple. I think there is a solution somewhere on Lightening in a world of thunder.

I would just put in a boost controller.

I have 99 spec turbos and they have no restrictor built into them.. What are you talking about with that??

Umm boost spikes are gonna happen when you add bolt on mads to the car.

I am assuming that you do have some mods on the car right?

Just get a decent Boost guage and put a manual boost controller in the line.

If you cant get controll ofthe boost after that, then I would worry about looking elsewhere.

Otherwise just treat it like a normal condition caused by modding the system.

Ok... I installed a Greddy Profec B into the wastegate line. It doesn't seem to make any difference. When the Profec is turned off it is as if there was no restriction at all correct? So when I turn it on all it's going to be able to do is add restriction and raise the boost correct?
