Help guys, I'm jones'ng for a 3rd gen RX7 bad. I've been looking around trying to find one. There's a ton of 93s in my price range, but there is one highly reoccuring theme. About 5 of every ten that I find for sale have new engines or new turbos in them. What's the problem? I'm hoping/assuming that people have just dogged these puppies and destroyed the engines and turbos. But I'm concerned that my dream car is a dream repair job. And I know parts for these puppies can't be cheap. Any idea what it cost to have a new engine or turbo dropped in a 3rd genner? Thanks Buhbuh

I'm currently having my motor re-built after 111,000 I took care of my car. I ran it hard but I didn't beat on it, I always let it cool down for about a min or two before turning it off. I always changed the oil at 2k to 2.5k miles.

The 93-95 model RX-7 puts out a ton of power for it's motor size, so with that in mind something is gonna wear out sooner or later. I'm not mad that I have to put a new motor in mine, I count the days till it's back out on the street looking good and beating just about everything it comes across.

A rebuilt motor should run about $2100 for a basic setup and the price goes up for whatever you have done to it, a used set of turbos can be found for about $400 to $600, just have some new seals put in and they're good as new.

So at a cost of $3000 every 100,000 or so miles seams like a deal to me for the amount of fun you get out of driving it.

Well I've had my 93 for just a couple of mos. Has 41K miles. Having a coolant leak from the turbo hoses and the dealer is telling me I might need a new turbo at a cost of $4500 for a new one. I can probably have it rebuilt for less. I've heard that the twin turbo is junk and I should replace the whole thing with a single turbo kit which will last much longer. Cost of this upgrade is about $5000 parts and labor. I'm pretty new to all this stuff so maybe I'm being given the "rich guy" prices. Problem is I'm not that rich. I just like the car and everything else on the car is in cherry condition down to the red leather interior and orig paint. I'm going to do another post about the turbo thing to see if I'm being ripped off.

Man, you must be getting ripped off. Those prices soud a few thousand too high. But I've only got a 2nd gen. so what do I know.

$4500 is normal for a DEALER. A small shop will usually just slap a set of used turbos on the car if they're no good. Used sets can be had for about $500.
