Currently my FD has a custom 4.5" muffler on it. Well i dont know who made it or what the specs are. All i know is it is loud as all Hell. Hence cops allways seem to look for me o a 1/2 mile before i get there. If i get on it anyhting above 4k RPM is very very noticable. I was just wondering what the best muffler is i coudl put on with out losing any power. If i stay any where near this loud i am going to get lots of tickets. Hell i'm sure i could get fined for the DB level in most rural area's let alone all the attention it get's. To top it off it looks like a damn coffe can stickin out my ass end. I just figure i got the balls to back up the sound. So it's not to ricey.

Try borla mufflers.

Mazdabation 03-03-2003 02:08 AM

No you want to use the Borlas as a resonator in the mid-pipe.

For actual quieter sounding mufflers, go with something like the Racing Beat dual tip.

They have a stock look to them and keep the car at a nice DB.

Then put something like the Borla in the mid-pipe, which will quiet it down even more.

Some have said its as quite as stock with this set up.

Silver Ninety Three 03-03-2003 02:13 AM

Greddy sp work well also. The rb is too quiet for my taste.

Mazdabation 03-03-2003 02:16 AM

I have also heard that the GReddy SP is a nice sounding exhaust.

Yes, like Silver just said so you know, the Racing Beat is very quiet.

qwester007 03-03-2003 07:51 AM

I love having an exhaust with a silencer. I've tried everything from

Apexi, HKS, and Greddy, but have had the best luck with an off

brand I found with good build quality and a removable tunable silencer. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...>/bigthumb.gif

9BASE3 03-03-2003 09:48 AM

Is the WHOLE EXHAUSE 4.5"? Or just the inlet and outlet of the muffler? If it's just the muffler, it shouldn't be THAT loud. But if you have a DP and MP combo, then I understand.

If you have a DP and MP, get the RB dual.

RotaryNoah 03-03-2003 12:46 PM

Yeah I have Blitz its sounds great not to Loud and it came with a free silencer just if You wanna run quiter. A friend has the GReddy SP on his FD sounds great too. I would go with one of them before Borla.

if you run with a silencer all the tim you should save your money and just buy a smaller diameter and quieter designed exhaust system, at least that's how I think about it because I too like the sound with a silencer but i cant see spending my money on a system design to be big and loud and just silencing it, ya know?

my favorite sounding exhaust on the fd, and the hks carbon-ti.....i just sold my SP though, and am getting the **hook-up** from topspeed on the full exhaust system......new dp, mp, & rear section......

-=RX-7 KID=- 03-03-2003 03:53 PM

Well i like to be loud just not any where near as loud as mine is. My exhaust is done over the whole way it's 3" all the way back. It has a downpipe, test mid pipe ( no cats ), then it goes to this huge 4.5" muffler. I have a friend with a rustang 5.0 with dual exhuast and i'm about 4x as load as him. I think my muffler makes me louder. I dont want to be stock mind you. I: just dont want every cop for the next mile to hear me when i go above 3k RPM. So i do want to have a nice rumble just not a hey cops looky at me type of sound. Or is there no way around that?

9BASE3 03-03-2003 03:59 PM

The RB dual will quiet you down. Or try welding a Borla XR1 racing muffler in the mid-pipe.

Salamander 03-03-2003 09:20 PM

A quieter exhaust will end up costing some power, although from the sound of your note it may be worth it. www.rx7club.com has athread on exhaust sounds. A guy has posted the sound of an RX7 with a Borla resonator and a Racing Beat cat back which sounds pretty good.

94touring 03-03-2003 10:12 PM

Racing beat or M2 duals. I love my M2, espcially after having the N1 duals....LOUD A55 EXHAUST

helihansen 03-03-2003 10:59 PM

I will tell you after tommorow how my Greddy Power extreme sounds when I install the midpipe. Hopefully im not following your lead and looking for a way to quiet mine as well. So far I love mine but until now I have had the cat in soooo..... https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub..._DIR#>/dry.png

FikseRxSeven 03-03-2003 11:53 PM

im in the same dilema........ i want a deep sounding exhaust........ but not too loud

davidz 03-04-2003 05:25 PM

Is the RB single tip much louder than the dual tip?

onboost 03-04-2003 05:31 PM

not much at all...

same canister, just the tip.

No- Don't run a silencer all the time. Just when you need to shut it

up a little. I can't drive into a parking lot, let alone a parking garage

without causing all of the car alarms to go off. The silencer also helps

to keep the 100+ decibel exhaust roar to a minimum which keeps the cops

from finding a reason to give me a ticket.

The silencer is quickly removed when I'm out running her or when I head to the track.

-=RX-7 KID=- 03-04-2003 08:04 PM

Well i ran out to SevenSpeed today they had my car up. so i got to take a look under her. The exhaust is all Custom. It's all 3 inch stright back till about 1.5 feet before the muffler it widens out to 4.5 inch. It's a Greddy Muffler too. The guy's up there said the could tourch out a section and bolt a borla on. I guess that would make it a little less loud. What do you guy's think?

-=RX-7 KID=-

vosko 03-04-2003 08:12 PM

yes a borla xr1 in the exhaust will quiet it down

onboost 03-04-2003 10:13 PM

XR1 is hardcore, it will lower about 3 db on a 3" straight through exhaust.

it fits under the transmission tunel with no problem at all.

onboost 03-05-2003 12:41 AM

I did a compareson test last summer. Standing at about 50ft away (the California Law is limited to 90db at 100ft)

as you can see the XR1 is quite helpful. Compare to a straight through mid pipe, the XR1 is a lot quieter, and it is almost the same as having a high flow cat.

APEXi N1 Single with no silencer and stock cat at idle

APEXi N1 Single with no silencer and stock cat at appox 2500rpm

Generation 1 Trust SP with Borla XR1 at idle

Generation 1 Trust SP with Borla XR1 at 2500rpm

helihansen 03-16-2003 06:30 PM

Rx7kid how have you made out? Did you end up putting the borla silencer in and if so how does the car sound now? I HAVE to start looking for a way to quiet mine down as well I have greddy power extreme which *used* to be quiet until I installed the midpipe. Now its a whole different story. Anyone else have a power extreme that they needed to quiet down?

onboost 03-18-2003 01:40 AM

The new power extreme is just not as good as the good old trust exhausts... https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub..._DIR#>/dry.png

the further up towards the turbo you install a silencer the less droning you will get from the exhaust noise. If mid-pipe + power extreme, it can be pretty obnoxious

GEB 03-18-2003 08:10 PM

I've had the PE since 98. I've had it with the stock cat, mp and resonated mp. IMO it sounds like arse with the MP. However, a resonated mp will help a lot. My buddy has the SP with a stock cat and it sounds a lot louder and higher pitched (like a weed whacker) than my PE with the stock cat.

I'm about to switch to the RB dual with a high flow cat....much sweeter. The older I get, the quieter I want it. It's now my Wife's transportation to and from work. I really got the RB out of necessity - she's a cop and she got tired of ricer honduhs trying to race on the way home from work every night! LOL! no ****!

GEB.

helihansen 03-18-2003 11:22 PM

I have been told that with a pre-silencer in the midpipe that it will sound almost like my car did before with the stock main cat which is fine by me. I am looking into a dynomax round muffler right now that summit sells for $70. I am still doing researh on it so ill let you know how I make out. Anyone have this set up or maybe has had experience with the dynomax race mufflers?
