I just installed a heavily ported 13B into my otherwise stock 3rd gen, and was wondering if I would still have to put in a new ECU if I add an exhaust / intake. I know it is deadly to run a 13b lean, so I don't want to risk adding more air into the engine if not enough fuel is going in. I figured the porting would bring in more fuel anyway (to balance more airflow from exhaust / intake), so perhaps a new ECU would not be needed.



Also, I live in mass., so any upgrades I do have to pass emissions :(



(its already passed with the ported motor)



Any help is greatly appreciated.

dont do a mid pipe and you will be ok. But a ECU will help the idle for sure. Stock ECU can handle 12-13psi on its own but when you do a midpipe or highflow sometimes the boost goes out of control and BOOM you broke. So you will be fine.

Would the Racing beat 304 catback exhaust be a good choice?

buy a boost controller and set it at 10psi if you dont have an aftermarket ecu

go and pick up some ball valves from your local menards or bomgaars and use those to replace the pills in the wastegate and precontrol vacuum lines if you're planning on running a midpipe/full exhaust. check out this page: http://www.scuderiaciriani.com/rx7/turbos.html for installation and settings. you'll have to scroll a little more than half-way down for the stuff.



FWIW: I've been running a full exhaust with just these ball valves for boost control, many heavy runs, and no problems.

nice and quiet at idle and cruise, and wakes up just enough when you get on it. i'm running this exhaust with a DP and MP and i'm very pleased with it.

You can listen to anyone you want but I have broken a motor running with a MP. Trust me it will break your **** especially when it's cold, i.e. 40 degrees and lower. When it is warm it is no big deal to control boost. 70 and above. Racing beats exhaust is restrictive as hell but sounds good.

The port alone does not add fuel. It will only allow the "ability" to move more a/f. Your stock injectors and fuel pump are not moving more fuel because you simply made the port bigger. If you want more fuel you have to add new fuel pump to move it, larger injectors that can spray it and an ECU that will tell it when to spray it.

You run a mid pipe without the proper fuel system and you serious increase the likelyhood that you will blow up your engines apex seals.

I was just planning on doing the exhaust for now, as my stock one has a gaping hole in it and I can't pass inspection. I just wanted an exhaust that was high-flow enough to work well with future mods but close enough to stock that it wouldn't throw the boost levels or run the engine lean....it seems like that racing beat (with no DP or MP) would work well to that end.
