My check-engine light is on (stock ECU), so I checked the codes. It was "EGR Switch - open or short circuit". But then I realized the EGR has been removed (just bought the car - woo-hoo). Can I get some help what to do?
Also, when I finally replace my ECU, will I lose some functions, such as error codes, AC, etc? |
I have an egr you can have if you pay shipping. Other than that I couldn't tell you.

If the car is a 93 Cali spec car or a 94 or 95 then you have to have the EGR to keep the light from coming on. I heard of someone using a relay in it's place, but that sounds like a pain.
When you replace the ecu you normally won't lose any of the normal functions. Some ecus have a little trouble with the a/c and turbo control system(namingly haltech) but are remedied without much tribulation. |
i did the relay it took all of five minutes and fixed the problem!! i drove around for months with damn light on. all you need is a relay and some wire. i dont have the directions for it any more, but if you look on the net you can find them. i will look around to see if i can find the directions for you. good luck and trust me you want to do this mod, is sooo easy you'll beat yourslef in the head if you dont try it.

later sully I don't know if my car was a Cali or not. I assume if the light is on it must have been? Do non-Cali's just have a block-off plate (I have one). Yeah, I need a PFC bad. Plan on gettin' it next summer with a new intercooler and mid-pipe. Damn these Michigan winters! |
the 93 federal cars have egr but no sensor
the 93 cali, and all of the 94's have egr with the sensor 95's have no egr at all mike |

With some help from spooledUP7, I have sucess using a relay to trick the ECU to think that the EGR is present! In other words, no more codes! Here is what I did. 1. Remove EGR and use a block off plate - make sure that you keep track of the wiring that originally goes to the EGR valve. 2. You need to get at the solenoid under the UIM. Note the soleniod we are talking about is the 4th one from the front of the car. I believe that it is yellow in color. If you want to make sure, please refer to any vacuum diagram that you have access to. To get at the soleniod, so I found it easier to just remove the UIM. 3. Okay now for the wiring: EGR side - The harness from the EGR needs to be tied to pins 87a and 30 of the relay. Any standard 12v relay will do. To make sure, putting a meter on these pins will give you continuity. Attach couple of female spades to the wiring an hook it to the relay. 4. Solenoid side (under the UIM) - disconnect the solenoid harness and then use 2 male spade connectors to tap into the female side of the solenoid harness. Polarity does not matter. The other side of this connection goes to pins 85 and 86 of the relay. Pin 87 of the relay does not come into play so leave it alone. 5. That is basically it. Mount the relay, reinstall the UIM and you're finished. Now would be a good time to do the hoses. Here is how it works. With the EGR harness connected to 87a and 30, the EGR has continuity. When there is a signal from the ECU to open the EGR circuit and the relay switches from the 30/87a connection to 30/87. Since 87 is not connected there is no harm done and the ECU is tricked into thinking the EGR valve is there. Basically, the ECU believes that the relay is the EGR valve itself. these are the instructions i used. i know they work. follow them and your in. take it easy sully |
