or turbo noise?

My FD (1994 R2 80k miles original engine 5 speed in case you need any of that info) Is making this noise and no one has a single answer.



In the morning I will start my car and drive it up the hill (I live in a valley) It is quiet until it comes to the hill (about 1 minute after startup) While going up the hill in second and third gear it makes a noise at about 2500-2800rpm It sounds like a saw cutting through wood but is not as loud. It started making the noise a week ago. I took it down to a small rotary shop and (as always when your car is making a funny noise) wouldn't make it for the mechanics there. My FD really doesn't make it once the car has warmed up.



I have a small break in my piping from my inter cooler to my turbo (the pipe just slipped off the other one and is resting on top) I don't think this could be the sound I hear but some think it is. I have the new tubing to fix it but I am wondering if I am hearing the sound through that break.

It is coming from the front left (if you are facing the car)

the car is probably making more boost going up the hill because the motor is working harder. if it is the break, why dont you duct tape it shut and see if that stops it

or changes it in any way. just an idea. i'm always a fan of experiments!!

It makes the sound on flat ground too but it is just most noticeable going up hill.



It sounds like a metal on metal noise to me and I don't think the open piping would make it. I still feel my car making boost. I am leaving the piping like that for when I take it to someone who can tell me what the noise is. I don't know if my car will make the noise if the piping is closed off. What if it is not related to the piping and it is the turbos but closing it off will muffle the sound completely? I know it sounds crazy but I guess i am a crazy person. That would be my cars fault.



Could my turbos be blown? What are the signs of that?



I need my FD it is my daily driver. It has been sitting for a week and I have been borrowing cars. Couldn't get a hold of speed machine today https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub..._DIR#>/sad.gif but Monday is always a busy day for everyone.



Should I put the pipe on and keep driving my car? I have barely enough for a rebuild but that is honestly the only money I have. I cant risk an engine rebuild when I could replace whatever is wrong.

i woudlnt use duct tape on the hole, might get sucked in and that would be no good. I would fix the hole though seeing as how it could be sucking in who knows what... the only bandsaw sounding noise i have ever heard was a throw out bearing but that would only be when you push the clutch in i think...

Sukai94, you are not alone. I have the identical issue that occurs at the almost the identical rpm range (2900 through 3000). My FD is also a 1994 with 84,000 miles on a completely stock set-up.



Other than that metallic grinding noise, that car pulls fine and runs normal.



While at my local shop, I learned that I have a rear turbo that is weeping oil and is in need of a reman. I am suspecting that is the source. Though the noise was not present the last time I had the car at the shop.



If my guess is correct, the sequential system allows the secondary turbo to be pre-boosted. I am not a mechanic or a turbo specialist but what I notice is that there is no loss of power or drain on the power felt went the noise is heard; I have a specific part that is requiring maintenance and the noise is coming from the right (turbo) side of the engine bay.

I really don't know what could be making the noise, but I saw these statements and tried to think of anything that is affected or changed when the engine is cold or hot.... and thought of the airpump. It was just speculation, but I threw it out. I don't think they fail often, so I'm not sure what they sound like when they do, but it's a pump....and I figured it could make the "chainsaw" sound your describing.

Not sure if you have found the source of your noise but I had mine found and fixed this afternoon. For me, it was simply an old tin heat shield on the pre-cat that was rattling. It was there to prevent fires if parked over something flammable; ie tall dry grass. The guys at my local shop bucked it of with a torch and presto; no more rattle.
