I keep loosing the coolant out of the overflow tank after shut off. I'm hoping its just from the overflow but the low coolant buzzer goes off every few days if I dont top it off. I checked almost everything relating to the cooling system. Water pump looks good and spins freely(have a brand new one just in case), replaced the t-stat, flushed the system. While flushing the system i did notice that the stream seemed as if there was air in the system but there was a steady flow of clear water coming out of the drain hole on my Koyo. Since I did this it was not ran hotter than 94C on the PFC. It runs mid to high 80s most of the time. It hits 90 or 91 while doing "spirited" driving but cools back down to 89 cruising at 65 or 70. The exhaust does not smell like coolant but i cant really smell it for long cause i got no cats in it. I havent seen any white smoke at any point. What else should I look for, pay attention to or avoid in order to sort this out. It may very well be the heat wave we had the past few weeks but its enough to make me worry about the possibility of ending up on the side of the road with a engine gushing coolant and having to get a damned flat bed to get it home!

TIA

Manny

Well sounds like a cooked motor. Pressure test the cooling system. Look for Bubbles in the coolant aswell. But IMO it is in need of a motor.

Yeah I think it is that time for mine too. My dad said he smelled coolant and it only overflows when I top it off. Also when I turn it off I think I hear the coolant boiling. (not good) It doesn't eat up the coolant though. I guess I just might have a bad Water pump or something. I just dont have time to check it since I am at work 99% of my life....

I'd listen to Rikki he knows what he is talking about. He has probably seen a dozen this summer.

I know thats what my crab cooker was doing when it shat on me.

you can actualy tell where in the seal/housing the seal is going to be bad befroe tearing it down.... if you cna see champaign bubles in the coolant or it flows into the overflow, your seal is bad durring the compression stroke/exhaust stroke. if it smokes its in the intake, if it smells in the exhaust its in the exhaust stroke... i actualy had a motor that the wall let out on it before. :( bye bye housing....

vosko 07-23-2003 09:58 AM

the housing cracked on my original engine due to corrosion and burned a shitload of coolant !

I see no bubbles and smell no coolant(well except when its pooling on the underbelly tray under the overflow tank).

Helpful links! It does sound like my seals are done. I'm missing the coolant smell and the puffs of smoke but i'm sure thats just on "stand by".

I guess a rebuild might be in order. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683664.gif

Yeah just rebuild it. Sounds like alot of work but when you have spend more time taking stuff apart looking for the problem to be something else you could have already had your car back on the road. GoodLuck!

turbovr6 07-23-2003 06:51 PM

one quick thing you can do first is replace the radiator cap on th eengine and the AST. If the cap goes bad and can't hold pressure, all the pressure will go to the overflow and boil it over. It won't hurt to try, and if you do need a rebuild, I would change things like the radiator cap on a new engine anyway. So you really won't be wasting any $$$
