I had the fortune of running across a '93 FD R1 for sale yesterday and was thinking of picking it up, but wanted to get an idea on what a fair price would be. Here is what I know about it:
- '93 Gray R1 with 91k miles - Original engine afaik - Rubber hoses look to be in decent condition - Tires with about 85% tread left - Some of the interior parts are loose: glove box, pass. side door trim, steering column cover - Compartment lid on driver's door is missing - Car pulls strong but seems to loose breath around 4-5k up, dealer says the turbos checked out ok, but one of the cats are clogged which will be dealer-replaced upon purchase - Occasionally slightly erratic idle which dealer says is related to the clogged cat - Bit of body roll when taking a freeway cloverleaf onramp, dealer says he noticed some rear suspension noise as well - Dealer agrees to have fuel filter changed out as part of the purchase price - Title is clean, car has failed smog once but has never been marked as a gross polluter - 5th gear synchro seems to be ok - Shifter has a bit of a loosey-goosey feel to it (I'm thinking this should be a simple bushing replacement) Dealer is asking $14.9k for the car. |
get a compression and boost check first and foremost..
that is of course prior to the usual visual and history checks.. |
I don't think they had a Silver R1 in '93. They started Silver R2's in '94-'95 though.
I think you could find a much better deal out there to tell you the truth. With 91k miles on the original engine/turbos they wont last much longer. Maybe if they throw in a 3yr warranty or something. Dealers always seem to have pretty high prices on used 7's for some reason. Just to note, I bought my '93 with 50k original miles on the chassis and 5k miles on a new(built) engine for $15,500. I got really lucky though but had been looking for over a year as well. |
You can find much better. I got a new engine w/ only 90k on the chassis, new turbos, EMS and a bunch of other stuff for $12K. From a friend though. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

Thanks for the replies! I wasn't sure if the price was fair or not, since I felt it was inflated, but don't know if the R1s carry a premium over the base and touring versions. I guess I'll pass on this one and look some more. It was the first time I've ever driven a rotary before. The engines are so damn smooth!!! I mean I could hear the engine purring, but when I revved it there was almost no vibration. Plus the car was fairly stable at speed, I didn't even notice I was doing 90 until I looked over and saw the salesman clutching his seat!
wrex: Car was a dark gray color (I don't know the official name for the color). Speaking of the engine mileage, what's par for the course on 13B-REWs before needing rebuild/replacement? Engine in the car seemed ok, no smoking on start-up at all. Dealer had sent the car to a mechanic before he put it on the lot, so I figured there wouldn't be any use looking at the coolant and oil condition for clues about how the car has been cared for (since he would have had those replaced). |
yeah, thats a high price for a car thats only in "fair" condition

Get the car on a lift also and check for oil pan leaks and the engine mounts.

Depends. From what I've read, some go as far as 150k stock. Then again some stockers blow every 80k.
