Well................. I pulled a Vosko tonight

I was doing some 'spirited' driving today looking for cars to play with. as i drive past J&R, i see a black monte SS pull out ahead of me and do a lil fishtail trying to showoff.

me being me, i decide i'll play cool and just ease into the throttle a little just to keep up with him (dont want to embarass him just yet) so i shirt into second and EASE into the gas, and just before the car comes under boost i hear clunk POW!!!!!! bdump, bdump......... i try to pull to the side of the road and the pass side rear wheel locks up for a sec almost making me kiss a parked car. i finanny roll into a parking spot and sit there for a sec before seeing raindrops begin to fall, ****!!

anyway, something is broken, it sounds like an axle because as i was towning it home (damn shop is closed for vacation, and i was only 2 blocks from there!) i could hear and feel something slapping arround ocasionally. when i look under the car, i dont see any axle hanging though. it could be the tranny because it felt like an explosion in the tranny when it first happened, and i can feel weird grinding and other bad sounds through the shifter. but i think if i broke second gear, some other gear would work, but the car dosent move in any gear. mabye i broke a diff, but i dont see any fluid leakage under the car, and from what i've seen, most FD's that break diffs crack the diff case......

i have 4 extra stock axles, 2 spare stock diffs and one extra tranny, but i dont have the energy to fix this **** now!!! why the **** did i have to drive the damn car today?

should i even bother to change the axle if thats what broke or should i keep waiting on a friend in NJ (*cough* John *cough*) to get me the 300M axles i've been waiting on?

why the **** didn't mazda overbuild these cars like toyota did with every generation supra? you mean to tell me that in '90 during the design phase, nobody at mazda had any clue that people were gonna put motors into FD's that were making more than 225hp? mazda ******* pisses me off.......

that sucks. pull on the axle from under the car you can tell if its broken. look for grease too. it sounds like you broke your diff not your axle though :(

norotor_nomotor 01-02-2003 09:08 PM

damn man that sucks

at least the mechanical failure did not lead into anything else speed...

ya, sounds like the diff, that's pretty much what happened to mine, all it did was break of about 7-8 teeth but it makes an awful sound. good thing you have spares!!!

Silver Ninety Three 01-02-2003 11:22 PM

Sounds like the diff. I have alot of extra diff parts and casing if you need them.

i sold the TII.........

rotorbrain 01-05-2003 06:19 PM

whats this mystical "TII diff mod"? why would you do that if you have FD pumpkins laying around like you mentioned earlier.

the TII's have a MUCH stronger differential than the stock FD torsen. if you break an FD torsen YOU WILL BREAK ANOTHER ONE. there is no point in putting back another torsen to break it again............... either put in a TII diff or a cusco,kazz,re-amemiya https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

Whats involved in installing a TII diff?. I assume the FD diff housing is retained so are you talking about just swapping the limited slip unit?. Is it all a bolt in affair or is some machining/fabrication involved?. Just to be a pain, why is the TII stronger? Thanks.

little rotor 01-05-2003 10:52 PM

Ooops. I just read silver ninety thread about his new TII diff and all my questions were answered. Seems like an easy/cheap mod. I always thought torsons diffs were the ultimate but now I can see their downside if your loading them up hard.

vosko 01-06-2003 08:45 AM

yup clutch type is alot stronger. obviously an upgraded unit is better than a stock TII but for the money a stock TII unit is great ! i am running an re-amemiya lsd.... i love it thus far !
