my check engine light has been giving me the code for "EGR switch failure" (16) for a LONG time (happens seemingly at random), but I've had no luck getting anyone to figure out a fix (even supposed 'rotary experts' at a Mazda dealership)...it doesn't seem to effect performance, but it comes on all the time and is annoying. Anyone else ever get this code?

Also, will a bad (or failing) o2 sensor always cause the check engine light to come on? I suspect mine is bad but get no 02 sensor error code.

Maybe you have a simple short. Rip into the dash.

I've never messed with the fuses before...is there simply a set for the ECU that could be bad?

Just check out the fuses. If the fuse is good check the wiring. Maybe someone could post a fuse diagram, I have no idea what I did with mine.

Just do everything you can think of. Sometimes the check engine light is a precursor to terrible things to come.

The EGR "switch" appears to be a CALIFORNIA ONLY device. Checking the FSM (page F-127), it looks like you just need to change it out... or consider just removing the EGR... but if you do, you'll need a block-off plate.

It's a long shot, and it's almost certain to come back, but I have heard of transient little blips causing a CEL. Have you tried re-setting the ECU to see if the CEL goes off? (disconnect the neg. battery terminal and press the brake for 30 sec.).

In any event, I don't think you need to "rip into the dash".

yeah ive done the ecu reset, but the bugger keeps coming back. it just seems like if it was just a fuse, the mazda guy would noticed...I mean they did drop in a new ported engine for me so they can't be completely incompetent...

I noticed the thing about the "california only" label on that code...I'm almost positive my cars not from cali though, as I have the original sales sticker (unless its been through some chop shops or something)...isan't there something unique about the cali VIN # so I can know for sure?

holy crap I checked that link you sent me and some of the symptoms associated with a bad EGR are dead on to what I've been experiencing lately (specifically crappy performance before 3800 rpm...)... so now I know the probable cause...has anyone tried plugging the vacuum line leading to the EGR valve? I'm just wondering if it would effect emissions, as I'm in MASS and failed my last inspection because of emissions.
