Hey everyone. got a problem.
I know my engine isn't blown, because before I parked her, She was running perfect, no coolant lights, no leaks, ran great. My FD3S been parked for about 2 months, and haven't been touched.. The battery even went dead. Anyways. I been trying to jump her, and she won't start. I am worried I might burn out my starter. But after several failed attempts to jump start I jumped out to look at the Exhaust. and there was visible whitish color vapors like slowly floating out the tail pipe. I am guessing its unburnt fuel. 1st qustion. " WILL Using STARTING FLUID help to start her up??? and if so DO I spray it into the INtake?? OR any place else???? While messing with the jumper cables, I noticed a ODD ticking/vibrating sound coming from under the hood. I Traced the noise from co ming underneath the UIM or Throttle body.. its like a ticking noise, Maybe like someting trying to engage, or electrical short. THE NOISE only happens when the Ignition is ON. When its off, its stops.. BTW. this is with teh car NOT running.. Just ignition on. Anyone know what it could posssibly be???? Go fast parts. Apex PFC w/ commander DP, MP, CB Greddy SMIC HKS intake Removed ASW *accelerated start warmup* Not sure about DOUBLE THROTTLE. *** RYAN DBAR do i?? *** Removed AIRPUMP 13.2 @ 106mph 1/4 with 2.4" 60ft Anyinput or help would be great.. lataz.. HKS power ign amp |
i would take out the spark plugs and throw some ATF in there and spin the engine by hand..... let it sit for a while then see if it will start....
|
i think its just flooded. the ticking is the bac valve, it's just trying to help https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

I don't know if anyone else has ever had this experience, but I have. Instead of just jumping it, replace the dead battery (or put it on a charger and charge it up before trying to start). If you're jumping the dead battery, you might be getting enough amps to turn over the starter, but not enough voltage to make the electronics work properly. Some cars just won't run worth a fart unless they've got full voltage to the ECU and all that stuff.
Of course, now that you've tried unsuccessfully to start it, it definitely will need the unflooding procedure. Good luck! |
yah, mazda rotaries like full voltage to the ecu, they get richer the lower the voltage gets

I know this is after the fact, but if you're gonna let her sit for an extended period of time. It's a good idea to A) pull the battery B) put battery on a trickle charger. Low voltage is a problem for all types of vehicles. Good luck, Tom

Did you get any thing figured out? I need closeuer!

If youre not too sure about using the ATF trick(it doesnt hurt anything other than the plugs-sometimes), you might want to try the "mazda technicians" way as explained on the service manual: get a good battery and hold the gas pedal on the floor while cranking the engine(I got lazy about a month ago and it worked for me). you can also pull the EGI fuse and crank it regularly for 15 sec. put the fuse back in and it should start(might take 2 or 3 tries).
ah, what the hell....you probably got it started by now... |
Did it start?????

Nope.. haven't had a chance to try to start
her yet. The car is parked at my in laws house. and havent had a chance to get out there. But it is really concerning me.. I think she's jealous because I been driving the Hell out of my civic. haha I was thinking.. When tring to start a hard start. Do you guys give it gas?? I tried pumping a little and holding to the floor. WOuld that flood it out??? Or should I just keep tring to turn it with out gassing it?? - Tring to not to gas it tring to hard start is hard to do. WHere is the EGI fuse??? worth a try. Taking ou tthe spark plugs, adding ATF fluid and turning the wankles by hand, sound really really really involved. Thanks |
The ATF trick is not that hard or involved....remove leading plugs, pur 1 ounce of ATF in each hole. Put plug back in, turn it..let it sit overnight
If youre really lazy, just hold the pedal to the floor and crank it....this is supposed to unflood it according to mazda. It did on mine about 2 or 3 weeks ago when i flooded it. Just have a spare battery or jumper cables and another car. good luck :bigthumg: |

A) Remove both Leading plugs - easy B) Pour ATF in holes - easy C) Crank by hand - hard. I was bored so I just tried to turn my crank by hand (impossible?). Are you suppoesed to use a wrench with one of the bolts, or is there another trick to it? D) Let it sit, then try to start it and piss-off your neighbors - easy My car won't start either, so I'll be posting some dumb-ass questions, sorry. FD Three S - is your car running yet? |

I'm sorry I'm a newbie moron, but I don't fully understand the ATF trick.

Nope haven't tried it again.
Going today to afterwork to start her today. WIsh Me LUCK... on initial start up try, should I put the gas pedal to the floor??? It has been sitting almost a week since I last tried to start her. BTW: how does ATF effect the starting ?? |
OK I found out what the ATF does..
I gonna try to push my car backwards in 5th gear to turn the motor. then try to start her. SO WHERE is the EGI FUSE on the FD??? SO try to start with it out for about 20 seconds then put fuse back in and then start.. Right?? Thanks |
i'm lazy, i put a 23mm socket on a wrench and crank it over by the alternator
mike |
BEEN raining the last 2 days..
Haven't tried starting her yet. waiting for weather to break.. SO WHERE is this EGI FUSE??? BTW thanks everyone for their input |
Oh yea , what is a BAC valve???
and what does it do? |
Something to do with Blood Alcohol Content. ... No wait. That's something else. Bypass Air Control. I believe it controls idle speed.
|
Try to buy a new battery, the clicking noise is the starter not getting enough power. Some batteries wont jump because they are too dead, happened to my daily driver, not fun. Let me know if it works :bigthumg:
|
Isnt the fuse under the hood?
These cars lose compression when they sit dont they? Nothing some cranking without the fuel wont help. I dont know about ATF thing, im not a big fan of it personally. I prefer MMO |
Tried to start it..
No luck Had it jumped for a while but still,no go. I think 7sins is right.. Battery so dead, won't even jump start.. Gonna get a new battery..and give that a try. Hoping that does the trick. ANY Battery recommendations?? are Batteries worth doing mail order? So freaking heavy. Thanks |
I would buy a battery from a bricks and mortar store close to home. That way if it craps out within the warranty period its easy to take it back.
I've not found one battery to be noticeably better than others. Buy the cheapest 60-month battery you can find and go with it. If you want to spend more you can buy a longer warranty, but I can't say it'll be worth it. |
I think walmart batteries you can replace for free at any walmart if it goes dead. Performance wise get an Optimia gel battery, I know advanced autoparts around VA sells them.
|
GAS!!! Your gas has probably lost its punch! pump it out and replace it!!! I would do that at the same time you go through the "unflooding" procedure...not sure ATF is necessary...just pull the plugs, pull the EGI, turn it over a few times, put in fresh plugs and she should go!

To update:
I bought a Redtop Optima battery. : Note: Optima batteries + and - Terminals are reverse. Had to buy +positive terminal extention for it to work. Battery : $129.00 plus tax.. Hope its worth it.. Battery Terminal extention 7 bucks.. Installed new battery and with a jump. Finally got her started after 30 minutes of cranking.. FD's must have one HELL Of a starter. She puttered as she started kicking out alot of smoke. but after 20 minutes of idling and some WOT. She running GREAT.. Thanks everyone for their input. BTW: HOW The hell you pull the EGI main fuse?? I attempted to remove it. But wouldn't come out. I didn't wnt to force anything, so i left it alone. |

BTW: HOW The hell you pull the EGI main fuse?? Isnt that one screw in from the side ? Check the sides of the prongs to see if a screw/bolt goes through it. |
