Can't pass emission test
I've got a 93 RX7 with only 30,000 miles on it. You can see i don't drive it much. Went for a motor vehicle inspection test[in N.Y.S.] and the car failed. High CO reading. It is supposed to be under 15gpm and it was 17 gpm. Close, but it still failed. Put some fuel cleaner in my gas tank, drove it a bit and had the car re-tested. My mechanic thought that should solve the problem. When I had the car re-tested the CO number jumped up to 26 gpm. It got worse. The car rides great. Plenty of power, no hesitation. However, I need to pass the emission test to be able to "legally" drive the car. Also, the "check engine" light has never come on. I thought if their was a problem, it was supossed to come on. Don't want to spend big bucks for diagnostic work. Any suggestion would be apreciated. thanks, burt. |
Hmm, I think you can lower CO by putting some alcohol in your tank run about half the tank through before you go through emissions. Anyone else verify this?

is the car all stock? if you're up for a little investigation check these things out
1. does the center of the airpump pulley spin between idle and 3000ish rpms? it needs the airpump to pass the test 2. you may want to check for codes, there are a few that dont turn the light on 3. new o2 sensor? yours is kinda low miles, but the ecu does use it at idle mike |
If the fuel system cleaner is still in your tank, that would explain the reading getting worse.
Did you drive the car hard before the test to allow the cat to get good and hot? |
three options
new cats pre and main... $750-1000 plug up the FUEL canister colocter ... free HKS CD ignition system.... $500 make the at four the plugs, wires, and O2 sensor like he said j9fd3s Form what I understand the are know in the auto industry as a "tune up" i'm not sure i'm new this go thingies called cars https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683329.gif |
Why do people even bother? Its not that hard to find a guy that will pass you for $50-$100.
