i have just bought my 3rd gen rx-7 and it has no emissions at all!!!this thing stinks. i would just go and have a universel cat convert weldded on but i dont know if that will hold up to the temps of the rotary???? i would just put the old cat back on with the airpump but i dont have one! i need some help!!!!thanks..

Supposedly there are a couple air pump-less cats out there for the FD, but I have never seen one in use or actual nubers to back up claims as to how well they burn off emissions.

I would find some standard FD high flow cat and try and figure out a way to get a GM electric air pump to work with it.

the problem is that the rotary cant run lean enough for the cat at and around idle, thats why the airpump is there.

It passes the test here in Japan. I have the numbers but the scanner isnt an workie anymore... I actually took it off my car, I only have it on for inspection.

if you are only concerned with reducing the smell of your car (NOT PASSING ETEST) you can get a random technolgoies cat.

i really dont mind the smell all that much anymore, but my car spikes soooo bad. it'll be at .9 bar and spike to 1.4 at wot. that scares the hell out of me! i was looking into a boost controller but if i had some back pressure that would help too. idk what to do right now? any help would be great.

exhaust restriction wont prevent a boost spike, if your problem was boost creeping up as the revs went up that would be what the exhaust restriction would remedy.

edit: just read your other thread, so you are just boosting high and not actually spiking. In that case any cat would be fine. You most likely will not get rid of the stink without an air pump, but it will stink less and the restriction will help reduce boost in this case. Get any cat, shouldnt really matter much which one.

Just make sure you weld the cat as far back as possible. Perhaps at the midpoint of the car near the tranny? or somewhere near that. The further back the lower the EGT, which prolongs the life of your cat. Unless u haev it so far back it is never at correct operating temps and it clogs up all the time.

btw don't ever gut your cat...

mazdapete7 01-18-2005 05:05 PM

so i can weld on a high flow cat on the end of the mid pipe and the cat wont clog-up? then why is there an airpump to start with? im new to this, sorry...
